Thank you so much for your sympathy and your kind words. It was truly lovely to meet you at JCon. Thank you.
from nacwolin :
(I am a goof - I tried to send this to you and put it in my own notes - DUH!!! Anyway...) I guess I wasn't completely clear - I do believe we can learn from other "groups" (I hate classifying, but for clarity's sake, I think you know what I mean). But I do believe that we have to first look around at those who identify with each other (i.e., in my case, Christians) and learn and embrace that we are interconnected. There is a even a Bible verse that says such - they will know we are Christians by our love (paraphrase). So, I guess what I mean is, let's all get along in our "group" (again, for me that would be with other Christians) despite our differences, and also learn to look outward and learn from others who wouldn't call themselves that. Does that make sense?
from captainron :
You were here in New England?
from batten :
oh you poor baby. Have Rudder tuck you up with an icepack and lots of TLC. Chocolate too if you can stand it and it won't stain your teeth. Big hug. -J
from batten :
I am now green with envy...
from batten :
Hee! I wondered if that entry would elicit a response from you. (grin) Big hug to you both. BTW: Dahlin', you look fabulous!
from sunnflower :
Came in through your banner. Like the photographic tour!
from parlance :
B-52! Yes, yes, fantastic.
from batten :
Thanks! Who knows. Maybe I'll have found yet anudda niche... I'm glad you had a good birthday. They're the best kind to have. If you guys do decide to go for a cruise around the country, set aside time for this place and we'll see about getting you two on a boat with sails...
from batten :
I AM older than you are! I turned 37 in December, woman! Many many happy returns. Your birthday makes the day worth having...Big hug. -J
from batten :
In answer to your question of today, is there anyone else in the world who combines rowing with a love of books... I'd have to say no. "You are unique in all the world." St. Exupery. Big hug. -J
from batten :
Hope he continues feeling better. Big hugs to you both. -J
from batten :
Grr. I can't sign your guestbook. Thanks for the validation. You're right. I'm not happy but I'm getting back to being so. One day at a time. I just really hope I'm not a lightning rod for trouble. Maybe I am a prime candidate for a bubble-wrap suit, huh? (grin) With regards to your entry today... You were blessed with a great sense of self and I think that allows one to bypass a great deal of sturm und drang. Big hug to you, woman. Talk to you soon, hopefully. -J
from batten :
You're about as far from boring as anyone I've ever met in all MY world ramblings. It sounds like you had an incredible trip, I'm glad you're home safe though. Big hug. -J
from strangerlucy :
what a fantastic trip you've had- and since i'm one of the penguin loving types, i really enjoyed the terrific photograph.
from captainron :
Thank god you are safe. Cars can be replaced, you can't.
from cruel-irony :
Just to let you know, I'm thumbing through your archives and enjoying your diary.
from kdip :
Manly Wade Wellman!!! Here I thought I was the one who had ever read those books (at least at our library) Thanks for reminding me of some great books. I'll have to look them up again. Oh, oh, ebay, here I come.
from cruel-irony :
I only got one request too, and I felt just like you do. Anyway, I haven't been able to read much of your diary yet, but I'm enjoying it!
from marn :
Yup, it's great by me. Every iota of incentive counts.
from marn :
It will be interesting to see where we are in six months. Already, a month into this, we have a fair number of people who seem to have already given up. I've found the whole experiment intriguing and I'm truly grateful for the posse--it's wonderful having a support group like this. Watching others keeps it interesting, I find, and gives more incentive to haul butt to the gym.
from strangerlucy :
thanks for your note- I think you're right- and I can't tell you the # of people who came in expecting you to promise them you'd be cutthroat and down and dirty as they wanted you to be- if you advised them truthfully on the law- they would walk out the door and look for the hired gun, so to speak. I was happy to let those people keep walking. The same applies for police in general though- I hear them insulted so often (of course, some deserve it, I know, but most I know were honest people-). I always tell those people to call an emergency plumber if their house is burglarized.
from marn :
Paul thinks my own shyness and hesitancy to ask the guys for help probably worked against me, so you're probably right about them--had I approached them, they might have helped me earlier. I was fairly intimidated by them. As for benching weight, well, when I count weight it's the 45 pounds for the big boy's bar and then I have a ten pound weight ring on either side. Some folks don't bother to add the bar in, and would say I'm only benching 20 pounds. Me, I say 65 because that's what I'm moving. I've found that the incline bench feels half again as hard as the flat bench--I make gains on it very slowly. Have you noticed the same thing, Paula, or do rowers use that bench? The smallest weight my gym has for the bars is 2 1/2 pounds and I can't even move up in those increments on the incline bench. Instead, I add those 1 1/4 pound magnets they use on the barbells, one to each end of the big bar. It gets me over the hump and lets me claw up to the five pound ring. It's not orthodox, but for me it works.
from marn :
Oh, the guys at my gym are *all* about the bench press, but most of them don't bother with the squat. They focus on the upper body because for a guy the payoff is so spectacular--you can bulk up quickly if you want. To my eye, many of them look like roosters--big shoulders and chests, skinny little legs. I'm glad you like the Krista site--she's really poured herself into it and it's well thought out, I find. I particularly like how she shows the "don't do's" as well--seeing errors in form helped me sharpen up mine. I used a Smith machine when I was learning squat form so I could drop low and not kill myself, but like you say, it's more of a core workout if you do it machine-free. (I have a very hard time learning proper form because I'm a piteously clumsy person with a poor sense of, um, where my body is, for want of a clearer way to express it. Once I learn the form it seems to get imprinted, but it doesn't come easily for me.) I enjoy the challenge though. The trick will always be to not injure myself through some stupidly competitive move :) Do you find yourself getting competitive in the gym milieu, or do you save it for the water?
from marn :
Books on tape! (Insert sound of open palm smacking forehead here). Why didn't I think of that? That would make a great change. Thank you--I'll look into that.
from marn :
A MILLION METERS! I almost fell off my chair when I read that number. I am much impressed. The elliptical machine does give me a bit of an upper body workout, but nothing near what a rowing machine would do--and upper body stuff is much tougher for a woman. My dear, I salute your grit. I hope I have the mental stamina to keep the cardio up; right now, at the beginning, it's still relatively easy. It's the boredom that does me in, you know? Um, yeah, OF COURSE you know ... you've clocked close to a million meters on a rowing machine!
from splorch :
You guys are all incredible. I mean that. And I've also edited with some qualifiers, because I certainly didn't mean to paint with such a big brush!
from of-her-soul :
