Even if you don't fancy Billie Piper (and you should at least have showed south-east London solidarity with her character Rose), all the girls seem to go wild for sexy David Tennant and his emo spectacles. Plus, Doctor Who is not sci-fi (or so the serious people who watch Babylon Five tell me). It's soap opera with time travel, scary bits, and vague magical gubbins. (NB: not scary in the sense of Pat Butcher.) By the way, I feel Diaryland notes are sadly underused, and I'm becoming increasingly dubious about the reliability of email (especially hotmail). But I suppose, reluctantly, that I'll have to acknowledge you will still be my friend even if you don't watch it. And since the series has now finished, you'll mostly be spared long Who-related rants until Christmas (and time-travelling Kylie, yay!).

ottodixless : |

You've lived in Britain since last year and you've never watched Doctor Who? I am truly shocked and appalled. Get downloading right now! (It's also on BBC3 at least twice a week every week, I think.) Don't they have it in your mother country either? Are you spending all your time watching Big Brother? (If you were spending all your time at dog fancy dress parties in south London, that would be an acceptable excuse, but I can't think of any other justification.) Even if you don't watch it, at least try and dream about it! Tcch.

Yeah, you're right. There's nothing like reading an old journal...laughing about the dumbassness (I know that's not a word but it damn well should be) of my youth. At least if I were to write in it now in 10 years I would have more to read then "Got wasted again last night" like I am stuck reading from 10 years ago now. Ha. That was altogether rambly. I hope you can peice that thought together. By the way I got your email and I am SOOOO (times one hundred million) happy for you. :)

that's the thing, I wasn't really trying for anything serious. But in trying to have *fun* with boys, trying to just "sow my oats" or whatthefuckever, I ended up causing pain (like with s) or finding myself in just plain weird ass situations (like with c), so... yeah. I don't think I am cut out for it. You're right. I think I need a break from boys in general. Just me and the cat for a while. It's so hard though. In Before Sunset, Jesse and Celine do talk about their "sexual encounter". She swears they didn't have sex because he didn't have a condom and that's one of her rules for one-night stands. He says that they did have sex and he even remembers the brand of the condom he used. After that, she remembers them having sex in the park. (Weird that she could forget it, though. Unless she was being coy.)

Hello again. I think I am actually going to go to the gym during the day today (I am so bored & am pretty sure you shouldn't go anyways since you are sick...)but I will be there tomorrow night for body blast. Hope you're having a good day.

Happy Hump Day! :) I hope you are feeling better. Are you feeling well enough to go to the gym tonight?
|

Hey Sickie, I hope you feel better soon. I'll give Power Pacing a try for sure, if they'll let us into their elite club, heh. And with body blast being in the gym we'll have more space to get away from creepy guy. We could try PP this Friday at 5:15 if you are feeling ok. Enjoy your day off (even though your sick). I hope you get lots of rest.

I frequently fall asleep stretched out on my bed, my laptop resting on my stomach. I'll wake up several hours later, curled up in fetal position, clutching it to my chest like a teddy bear or with my face smooshed against the keyboard, error messages beeping furiously in my ear. You would think, after the first time this happened, I would stop computing in bed. You would be wrong, but you would think.

cera-jeanne : |

I'm sorry I wasn't at the gym with you tonight - we could have laughed & rolled our eyes at el creep-o & maybe scared him off, although guys like him would take that as though we were flirting. I did read the part of your entry that you wished people who know you would go away but I don't think I count, as I will only be physically in your life for a short while & you're stuck with me until then, baby. And I really do care when you have a bad day & wish somehow I could make it better, even though I know I probably can't. But I am wishing hard that things look up for you soon because you deserve all the very best girl & don't you ever believe otherwise. And now after leaving you the worlds longest note I will say goodnight. :)

You bum. I didn't get your note cuz I was out. Luckily I had a feeling you weren't going to show so I lurked in the hallway until class started & then I left. Ha. There were only 4 others in the class & I didn't want to be a spectacle. My car is not liking this weather. It almost didn't start when I left the gym...I might need a ride on Sunday to the concert - do you think that would be possible? (if not I can take a cab) I'll talk to you before then anyways. Hehehe! No, no! I'm not the one swatting at bugs; that's my friend Blanche (aka, "mireillie") guest posting. She's a bit nutty...which is why I love her. :-) Hmmm, why am I so wistful? I suppose it's because, while I look at the world with a great deal of hope and I believe in -- and try to work towards -- a better future, it makes me very sad to see people being cruel and inhuman towards each other. I'm guilty of raging and selfishness -- something I allow to surface more often than I'd like -- but I still believe in trying to be the best version of myself possible. When I see others hurting, I hurt too. I hope that's a coherent answer. :-) If not, I'll work on clarifying. -cat PS: I *do* love your journal. Everything: the entries I've read so far, the way you present your thoughts, your layout...it's all fantastic!

I've never read the "Kill the Buddha" book though I wouldn't be surprised if it has a disclaimer about not literally killing people, since these are litigious times we live in. If it's just about resisting people in authority, Oedipus met his father in the road and killed him, and that didn't do a lot of good. But even nice old Jesus said you had to hate your father and mother and your life, so I think the moral is to avoid anything that anybody tells you, whether it involves killing buddhas or parents or reading books.

Thanks for favoriting me. You've got one of the funniest diaries I've seen in ages. I can't believe I missed the chance to grope a statue in a situation where it's allowed; I was too snobbish about ignoring everything connected to Juliet and seem to have missed some excellent tackiness.

i only hate the mother's friend in that movie. and tethiembe's(her brother) crime investigating. other than that i thought it was a really honest piece of work. it didn't blow me away. i just felt safe in the experience of it. hollywood is filled with one-dimensional characters trying to impress us with formula and flesh. and generating role-models that make us, quite literally, sick. xoxo.

I opted to spend my hard earned change on those wax bottles filled with day-glo mystery juice. no wonder our generation's cancer rates are projected to be so high...

But I think women in Canada are persecuted/punished for fighting for their rights- not in the same way as Iraquis but for example- women who leave their abusive partners are more at risk of being murdered then any other demographic in Canada, women who wear clothing that is considered too risque or socially inappropriate are condemned for it in court if anything (such as rape) occurs, women who are too outspoken about these issues are often joked about or referred to as ball-breakers, etc. In theory murder, etc... is also illegal in Iraq but most people turn a blind eye. I guess what I meant about romanticised is that Canadians romanticise the notion of swooping into another country and fixing their problems- it is more romantic to fly away to the middle east and work with the UN then to go into innercity women's shelters in Regina, or Saskatoon or La Ronge. Ya know... Anyway, it's a good topic for discussion over beers. Don't get me wrong lady- I totally respect your opinion and I'm not saying you're wrong- it's just a good topic for conversation and gets me going, ya know...

I have to weigh in here.... I am sure that there are some people who support change in Iraq and I think that there are very few people who believed that Iraq was an ideal place to live pre-US invasion. Sadam Hussein was a bad man- he tortured people, violated civil and human rights, and on and on. However, the US did not go into Bagdad because of this- there are things that have been and still are going on throughout the world that are far worse then the Sadam regime, like say genocide- that the US has no interest in intervening in. Why? Because these are generally poorer countries that are lacking in the natural resource windfall that exists in Iraq. Not to mention that like Osama Bin Laden, lets not forget that a number of these "terrorist leaders" as GW likes to call them, were originally supported, funded and maintained by US cash. Why? Because the US has an interest in controlling the resources of the middle east. So what changed about this relationship? The US no longer had control over these so-called terrorists- not that they suddenly began violating human rights because they've been doing that for quite awhile. Not only that but I cannot believe that a regime that would rape and torture prisoners, hold people in places like Guantanamo Bay without recourse to representation because of a loophole in the prisoners act (because terrorists are not part of an officially recognized army, they have no protection under the war crimes act and it's theoretically not illegal to torture them), is really the right road to freedom for any country.
As far as that hands off approach that you speak of in terms of women studies- I actually find the opposite in my classes. If anything I think people are really quick to ignore people's right to cultural difference and rarely is there discussion about whether or not we are imposing a westcentric viewpoint or ideology on other cultures and ways of being. Let's not forget that in Canada we live in a society where violence against women is systemic- at least one out of four girls will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime, one out of three women will be beaten by a partner- and our courts sentence theives longer sentences then men who rape. I just read about a case of a little girl who had been raped by her stepfather from the ages of 9 to 16. Her life is forever marred by this experience. The man (although he admitted doing it) got six months in jail and needs to attend therapy for an additional three years. This may sound extreme but I really believe that women are contantly endangered in our country and that we are not protected to the same degree as men by our justice system because in a sense the law still views us as chattle. Not that there is an admission of that but if you look at our laws the most punishable crimes other then murder are property crimes. Raping a child is sentences along the same lines as say, smashing out the window on someone's vehicle. I'm not saying we shouldn't be willing to help others from different countries, but I feel a little uncomfortable holding our Western values up as a standard of excellence. If nothing else, I think fields like women's studies (of which I am a major) are too enamoured by the 'atrocities' we see in other countries because they are big and bloody and put right in our faces. If anything we need to start looking at the less 'romanticized' forms of violence and oppression which are as real and as damaging as those from around the world.
My 2 cents.

Considering how she sees her marriage, maybe being a playwright at 16 is the better thing to mention first. I read that and got the idea that Maddin is a genius of sorts, but not, as people used to say, 'marriage material'. Depends on what you want, though. As for buying a painting, yeah, you have to love it at all angles and distances or it's not worth it.

Yeah, I found that most irritating about the Anne books, especially later on, but it wasn't as noticable as Emily with all of her psychic flashes and the dating of Japanese Princes. That being said, they are no where near as bad as the some of the other children's novel of the same era. Elsie Dinsmore comes to mind(my mom is a collector of children's literature)-she was a heroine who fainted and nearly died becasue her father wanted her to play a song which wasn't a hymn on a sunday. I suppose it had to be that way, because that is just what life was like, and her husband(Lm Montgomery) was a minster, who had some sort of mental disorder in which he didn't believe he was really saved. There are first hand accounts of him pulling out a gun at the dinner table and pointing it at her while laughing manically.

good, good, good for you. it's not selfishness, love, it's survival. you know, it's strange how things can be so distilled when we read about them as opposed to really experiencing them. as such, i can quite confidently say, friday, and i'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but I HATE YOUR MOTHER. i hate her. did i tell you that craig & i ran into her as she was coming into his building, and we were heading out, i think, to take me to the airport? well, we did. strange to realize, now, that that woman who was a complete stranger, (and still is, in a way,) is now someone that just pisses me off. strange, this. i'm sorry if this comes off as really fucking weird ... but she makes my blood boil in that way that it does when i'm reading a book very dear to me, and some shithead antagonist is thwarting the well-intended plans of my most beloved characters. HATE. but, hey ... without conflict, there would be no point to the greatest of stories. (ok, that last part was sappy, but i guess i had to somehow resolve my anger. ergh.) be well, dearie.

Yes, there's a poncho craze raging through London. And while there is nothing (much) wrong with the odd poncho here and there, the sight of armies of possibly armless girls swarming the streets in them is disturbing. Also, I've always thought of the poncho as a quirky kind of garment, maybe worn as an expression of individuality. So hundreds and hundreds everywhere you look... it just isn't right.

It's a little more symoblic (sp?) of me, in fact when my mom saw it she said "I don't want to see a picture of my daughter naked on the internet." Thanks for your note and your click. Your diary is rather amusing. I love the way you write.

girl friday: here's my RSVP. yes, alcohol makes one absolutely irresistable, especially to cats. actually, ziggy's always got his snout in my face ... when he's not nibbling on my feet, that is. that cat has a foot fetish. it's endearing, but annoying. and by the way, the distance between regina and chicago is 22 hours, whereas the distance between regina and montreal is a whopping 36. poo. i mapquested it. i'm a dork.

Seriously! I don't even buy hardcover books as gifts for family members. But yeah, tis a good read. And also, good point about both the Web site for ke's paintings...and that there are "good" versions of almost all foods. Thanks for the tips; you're v. helpful, miss friday.

You have so quickly become one of my favorites! Reading your entries feels like sitting in a study with a wise teacher, smoking pipes and .... well, not quite that stuffy and antiquated, but it's a comfortable experience. I love fridays, I love films. You rock! Have a great day! s-b

Did I mention that I appreciate that you offered a dream interpretation? I did now. Did I mention that I have no idea what you were trying to say? Sure I did. Did I mention that that doesn't matter? Of course. Did I mention that it is excatly 4:44 a.m. and that I'm rather intoxicated? Absolutely. Hi.

Do you have a cat you could lend me? The cuddling up under the duvet sounds nice with all the snow piling up around us but sadly my apartment is animal-free (supposedly, but there is this weird hockey freak who lives downstairs who scares us with her animal-like screams everytime someone scores). I hope you brought some gloves to work.

Hey lady. Sorry about the rejection thing- honestly par for the writing course. Put a big nail in your wall and start impaling the rejections as they come in.

If you need any artist info for your doc let me know. I do have access to that stuff ya know.

yeah, i guess it was a sort of contest. i was just looking for a story to tell, though. the past is FUN, eh? oh, and dear friday, can i audition for the films you and P make, whenever that may be? if my life then is as deadended as my current life, i'll be itching to get the hell out of dodge, even if "dodge" is a rad place like chicago, and "the hell out of" is far more northerly and chilly. (oh, i'll be there at the end of may. hee!)

Ginger Snaps II, eh? I look forward to its release in the UK. The original film was my favourite That Time of The Month, Canadian werewolf teen horror flick. Oh and I love her little whippy tail and the way it just...won't...stay tucked neatly down under her dress

i somehow missed your pixies entry! i'm so excited about going to the show, i must use many exclamation points! i might even throw in an OMG! i think that uppity woman in the plaid jacket who made you feel so small when you were younger is a mean bitch! who the hell does that shit? i would never! lush is lovely! i was first exposed to them in london in 1999! beautiful stuff! enough with exclamation points; i'm danger of poking my eye out! pixies!

Please note Ladybug's amendment to my Pixies entry. Kim Deal is too old to show her face at our local pub. Nonetheless, she rocks harder than any of us.

I really wish I had gotten tix for the chicago show. That sounded very fun. And I laughed at the WANNA BE thing, but also, how very mean. 15 year-old me would have died on site.
