from habbit :
hey now utah, nothing to hide, but less to say these days on ye olde diaryland. you know how to contact me via the traditional routes. im heading to our ancestral homeland on monday, can't wait to have a break.
from cultofme :
glad you got the bug, since school has made me loose mine. I only bought like 10 platters in the last month or so! that shostakovich record is really good. sigh... it makes me nastolgic. btw, i've gotten rid of cultofme. it time to move on and eliminate the evidence that could jepordize my future carreer in politics. er, something. holla at me when you get a chance and hope things are well in booklyn!
from frankohara :
Nice to hear from you, dear johnnieutah. best, Frank.
from cultofme :
good god the bay area is pretty. palo alto is boring, and i wish for the bright lights of the city proper, but i am on a mission. not the district, but to get some degree or something. give me a holla next time you are out this way!
from cultofme :
yeah, my real realationship broke recently. wanna add salt to the wound? i have to get rid of or find a place to store 90% of my records in preparation for my cross country move. good thing i still have mr. john walker to keep me company.
from frankohara :
Glad you're back johnnieutah. How was Texas? Keep writing. I'm in need some vicarious New York-ness.
from tankengine :
i can't believe that shit about your loft. i hope you are being safe! sounds like a lot of drama is going on- spring cleaning!
from salmondriver :
ooh i think i may come out for yer dj night
from gretared :
you don't need to pay brit prices for rekkids anyhow. even without the dollar down, you'll find the rekkids you want in nyc for better.
from cultofme :
i make it a point to ignore record clerks. i mean if they know sooo much about music then why are they behind a cash register instead of a guitar?
from habbit :
consider your lower back massaged. always here to help. do you have mp3s up of any new tracks? my track came out on an eyewash dvd, im itching to do more for an lp.
from habbit :
i think i know the t of which you speak. i dont like her work either, and i almost wrote the intro for that book too. its enough to make you grind your teeth innit? keep up the good work utah, dont let w/burg get to you.
from cultofme :
you know, i treat jealousy and envy as a compass. if i am hating on what someone else is doing it because they are doing what i should be doing. so why ain't i doing it i asks myself? anyways, you coming in to houston on your texas trip?
from cultofme :
the jeff buckley cover of 'hallelujah' is also pretty nice. i do keep an eye on girls that like tequila. but that is because they are trouble and man, do i love me some trouble.
from salmondriver :
oh did you see "Playtime"? i really wanted to go and see that.
from cosmokane :
great new year's resolutions, ju. here's to a smashing 05!
from anisettekiss :
LOL. Your resolutions look like a GREAT start. And I'm glad you won't be shooting yourself in the foot anymore.
from salmondriver :
i'm glad you blog or i might never have met you. hope your dinner was fantastic last night - i would love to see you in between xmas & new year's if you will be around.
from idiomatic :
i hope the apology at the end is directed to someone specific, and doesn't mean you're going to stop writing...
from cultofme :
police, terry riley and the ventures? what is it about a woman that knows how to dig for records? oh yeah, she's a music dork like me ;]
from cosmokane :
happy upcoming birthday! in europe, i am finally finding sources of techno records i like. this is a dangerous, dangerous thing - especially with the dollar so weak against the euro. take a bow, dubya! then i will kick you in the head.
from salmondriver :
can't wait for the vinyl madness.
from cultofme :
i have been looking for that indian drums one for a while. le sigh...
from cultofme :
i bet those indian records are hott!
from cultofme :
enjoy the break. sometimes not documenting the details brings the bigger picture into focus. still planning for nyc... i'll let you know when i am coming up.
from salmondriver :
well now we just have to hang out more in person so you can fill me in on all of your adventures.
from pro-keds :
prolly in a month or so we should have a show. def let you know. see you saturday!
from idiomatic :
he says: "I'm just not quite sure what you're protesting" but it sounds more like "I'm just not quite sure why you're protesting" becuase he thinks protesting is useless.
from tankengine :
reality??? who's damn reality?!?
from cultofme :
freedom means you can just now stfu. i have had trouble reasoning with conservatives of late since there is little discussion before regression into name calling and anger. does it worry you that the politeness and nessecary emotional detachment required to have an intellegent debate is missing today? good luck with reasoning with your friend.
from cosmokane :
i'm not sure i could have a conservative friend. i don't think i could. what (s)he wrote, i've already heard countless times from other conservatives. the similarity and bitterness on both sides strikes me. this nation is at war with itself. i don't know what to think about that.
from odalisk :
I forget that you're from Orange County sometimes. It's interesting how people mix up things that are verifiably true (Williamsburg is gluttonously prosperous compared with the majority of the world) with things that are patently ridiculous (pacifism/diplomacy/rule without the iron fist is equivalent to anarchy)...I'm highly suspicious of people who talk about traveling in the Arab world like it's some sort of irrefutable proof of whatever they're saying. It's really easy to form who knows how many different opinions of a given place, and even easier to see what you want to see.
from cultofme :
yep, everyone is looking at me trying to cop my style. i hear brown is the new black this year.
from chuchundra :
Hi, I've been reading your blog for a while now and I really like it.
from salmondriver :
so is it merely our assumptions which divide us?
from cosmokane :
oops, i just read your note chiding me on my hostility! :) yes, republicans may be people, but they have made a choice to support an institution that has negatively affected this country and the world like few have before. this is much bigger than, say, eating meat or buying sweatshop clothes. the point of keeping one's enemies closer is to keep an eye out on them. there is no need here, seeing as how the republican agenda is so loud, defined, and in the face. if someone is still a republican after all this time and debate and controversy, they've made up their minds. that said, i applaud you in your effort to possibly change some people's minds. that's how votes are won, one at a time.
from cosmokane :
it's the young republicans that bother me more. the old cats may be too entrenched in the system to change, but the young ones have to make a conscious decision in this information-rich world to buy into the system (either that, or they were born into it). the nationwide basis of getting along is a functioning democracy. when one powerful group with clearly defined, vested, and hostile interests tries time and time again to subvert democracy - this means war.
from salmondriver :
cannot wait to hear the lunch date details.
from cosmokane :
holy crap, take a republican to lunch??? you are intrepid, my friend. i am more in favor of, say, "ambush a republican on the way to lunch," or "meet a republican in an alley with your 3 big friends."
from salmondriver :
reminded me of you recent post on being a singleton: http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/facts_for_features_special_editions/002265.html
from salmondriver :
so are you never coming back, then? i can see why you wouldn't.
from anisettekiss :
Just wanted to let you know I'm still reading. I have a question... San Fran sounds SO AWESOME. I have always heard of what a large gay population they have there. I guess what I mean is, are there lots of things for straight people to do too?
from pro-keds :
hi! thanks, its true. yr seattle pics are so good!
from salmondriver :
can't wait to see the sassiness of the new outfit.
from tankengine :
i'm jealous of the cool weather and carefree coffee drinking
from anisettekiss :
*sigh* How COOL is that!? I'm glad you're enjoying yourself in San Fran!!!
from salmondriver :
whatever will happen to the cat??
from anisettekiss :
What a great NOTE! I'm glad you got some hot couch action. Yes. I still read your diary.
from cultofme :
rough stuff. i just talked to my ex for the first time in a month or two. we are supposed to meet up soon, but i'm a bit nervous since we havn't seen each other since we traded parting gifts. i'm sure you knwo it'll get better. time and booze cures all.
from joecartoon :
Hell yeah! Minor league baseball rocks!! You can't get much more 4th of July/American Pie than that. I bet you had a blast.
from anisettekiss :
wait. How did you get free pizza!?
from anisettekiss :
I'm way sneaky... I've BEEN reading it. xoxo
from anisettekiss :
*sigh* How cool is that?! I'm glad you went to the roof. Does this mean you'll be up there more often??
from cosmokane :
ew. if christians eat deep-fried twinkies, i'd rather choose hell. wait, that means hell will probably have deep-fried twinkies. crap.
from pirategirl :
I had a deep fried Oreo and a deep-fried Snickers at the State Fair a few months ago. I could feel my arteries hardening and my pants tightening when I took my first bite of the gooey, fried Snickers bar. I decided after that gluttonous display (that's what you're supposed to do at a fair, right?) that I far prefer regular old Snickers bars, that being able to tell the difference between the chocolate coating and the nougat and the caramel makes me happy. But I find twinkies detestable without the extra healthiness of being deep-fried, so I have not even the slightest urge to try one. But the experience is what it's about I'm sure.
from anisettekiss :
Aww sorry babe. I wish I were kidding...
from anisettekiss :
Hey JohnnieUtah. I had to mention that I wish I could read your diary, but the color burns my retinas.
from cosmokane :
the chutney sounds great. i'll be sure to try it sometime :) - c
from tankengine :
you are a pants snob
from emeraldtiger :
hello there! i just wanted to say hi and let you know i'm exploring your diary and am having fun reading about your adventures. oh, and yes, you can access mine. thanks for asking! take care!
from anisettekiss :
Thanks baby. Let me know when you want to get dirty. ;)
from anisettekiss :
OOH! Thanks for the list of ten! I love finding new music. Stay clean.
from arajane :
is it okay if i live vicariously through you? yes? good, because i already do!

from salmondriver :
i'm currently in philly, soon relocating to williamsburg. drink arrangements to follow.

hey i think i'm going to be your neighbor soon - southside?
from tankengine :

from tankengine :
welcome to summer! ;)
from tankengine :
cry me a rivah is right.
from tankengine :
thanks for changin that color!! :P
from cosmokane :
50 bones is a damn shame. how thoughtless! dads can so be like that :(
from odalisk :
holy shit. selling a big painting made by a child for peanuts is...unbelievable. that's just awful. awful awful awful. I'm so sorry.
from cultofme :
love, god, gin. i'm not the biggest fan of the magnetic feilds, but i think he hit in on 'love is like a bottle of gin', or whatever it is called. i really like dating, i do. but the biggest issue i have is finding women that interest me. and once i do i have trouble staying single. if your honest, nothing kills one's love life like getting a girlfriend. sigh, at least i have my sweet and faithful booze.
from pro-keds :
dude, he's hooked. stop stressing out!
from tankengine :
hi. thanks for the fun last night!!!!! i loved every second of it!!!
from johnnieutah :
no doubt, she is a supermegabitch.
from salmondriver :
it took me a moment to figure out you were playing the page 23 game, as your sentence seemed directly aimed at my head, having recently considered that my fundamental flaw is not ambivalence so much as equivocality. you have something.
from cosmokane :
suicide chess is the best idea i've heard in a while. well, since sunday, actually. but it rocks nonetheless.
from cultofme :
ah, i see you understand that the way to soothe a man broken soul is through good, gentle and everlasting booze.
from arajane :
oh man, what is it about sam rockwell? he makes me feel all goofy inside. sigh...
from pirategirl :
Man. I wish I were better at technical stuff so I could help. It might be the mac thing, since I use Internet Explorer and all that non-mac stuff. Other than that I don't know.
from pirategirl :
My dad played Japanese chess. He never bothered to teach me. He let me win at the average western chess once.
from thole :
all too often, i've had the bad luck to pick the train with the ranting derelict who must be removed by the police, and then miss my connection. there's a german word for that nighttime cold-and-lonely-freedom, but i can't seem to remember what it is.
from pantasy :
did you know that they are originally from Toronto and they had to move to Europe because nobody got them here?!? sheesh! Sometimes my countrymen shame me...and sometimes I shame my countrymen...but that, dear Utah, is quite another story altogether.
from pantasy :
um hi i love the sparks...drool
from pirategirl :
Thanks. I'm such a girl today... So foreign. The descriptions of your happennings almost makes me want to go out. That says a lot since generally I have no urge to leave my house.
from cultofme :
thanks for the note. i do belive in the therapudic powers of booty, but give a week or two to let the emotions and the confusions settle a bit. take care. -m!
from pantasy :
i'm so sorry to hear about that prostitute man...so icky.
from pantasy :
a girl can only point to her nether regions for so long and draw out the labia majora and minora with her fingers for so long. 1st syllable 1st word sounds like: imagine me hailing a cab...they got as far as "lab" and then one of my lady team mates said that she didn't know what a "labia minora" was when I told her...sheesh!
from odalisk :
that's super-creepy, the guy who was insisting you were a prostitute. Terrifying, really. I'm sorry it happened to you.
from pirategirl :
Now that I've read... You're awesomer that I thought. I wish I had a stripper...
from pirategirl :
Dude. Thanks for adding me. I'm getting drunk. I love you so much right now. XOXO
from pantasy :
no paypal, darlin'. it's the least i can do for you, what with gettin me all pissed up and all. you shall have it in May, just in time for your Chess game. ow! do you have a colour preference?
from frankohara :
thanks johnnie. I hope your party is fun this weekend!
from pantasy :
what size are you, Utah? i'll bring you one on my "Spring in NYC" tour...
from cosmokane :
holy cow, and i thought *i* had problems. i'm so sorry about the awful, awful date. it made for an engrossing story, though. best of luck traversing the wild and wacky world of single men :) - c
from idiomatic :
"a pint of guinness with an espresso shot added" -> where does such a beverage live?
from salmondriver :
mmm, how exciting! i like yer stories.
from cosmokane :
hey, despite the drunk horny aloneness, it made for a great story. a pleasure to read, as always. - c
from pantasy :
Dear Johnnieutah, I'd like to thank you for the fun times last night. In fact, I'm still feeling the after effects of the fun, and that ain't very much fun at all. Ouch. Indeed. xoxokim
from salmondriver :
thank you very much for the tip. i will be sure to try it next time i feel quiet.
from pro-keds :
thanks Utah. now that i'm OLD i can be as cantankerous and vituperative as i want with reckless abandon. and i will.
from pantasy :
Yeah, the article was in last week's Economist. I'll photocopy it for you, if you're interested. It's really just an op/ed, but provides an interesting perspective on how the Dems will benefit from Dean's downfall. I could never be a politician, if only because I like rock screams way too much. Whoahaaoawoahawoahawoah!
from pro-keds :
southern democrats are often more conservative than northern republicans. the 97,000 nader voters in florida probably weren't culled from the bush herd. And remember - Ross Perot did the same thing to Bush Sr in 1992!
from cosmokane :
hey, i made the soup! it turned out well. i substituted tofu for the sausage, btw. thanks for contributing to my dinners this week :) - c
from pro-keds :
Sad statistic of the day: if only 2% of the Floridians who voted for Nader had voted for Gore, Bush would have lost - no chads, no Scalia, no Jeb coulda stopped it.... man it makes my heart palpitate with frustration...
from pro-keds :
the rainbow photo was not a cliche. voting for nader is.
from frankohara :
I know!!! the bloody wnyc pledge drive! I was so looking forward to the "this american life" disneyland episode and instead I got a "very special pledge drive" episode which consisted of bits and pieces of old stories, none of them complete!!! ack. when does your band play next?
from cosmokane :
hey, i was just looking for a soup to make this weekend! so i'll make yours. what makes it "southside"? and any suggested veggie substitutions for the sausage? i'll see if whole foods has any soy sausage-esque stuff :)
from salmondriver :
i'm totally making this soup this weekend.
from pantasy :
cheerleader movies! did you watch "Bring it On!"? So sosososo good! Move out!
from cosmokane :
yo, yaz's "situation" is THE BOMB. especially the dope-ass synth intro. i think there are some modern remixes of it, but i haven't heard them.
from xoxotoe :
glad you're back groovin online again. i'd get withdrawls---obviously something a girl named amber would know nothing about. but leave it to a chivalrous texan to put things right. yeehaw!
from boxingnun :
i don't play anything...yet.....but i have a lot of energy...i could diy-play many things.....i could also just dance around....idk...i also have a toy casio keyboard that i got at a thrift store that i could make some noise on....mainly i just want to be a rock star....
from pantasy :
i'm there Feb 24th - Mar 1st. I've got Wednesday and Friday free for sure. In the day time I mean. Are you days rather free?
from pantasy :
cute boys and parties...what could be better than that? i'm in NY in two weeks' time. hope to see you then! and when are you gonna bring that human scale chess project to our nation's capital? xo
from cosmokane :
the idea of spending 72 hours on a road trip with an ex with sexual tension involved, frankly, sounds quite hellish :P i'm amazed that you did it! - c

fascinating stuff, johnnie. it's great to get the insider's scoop. don't let the massholes get to you! :) - c
from pantasy :
Hi Johnnie! Kim Steele here, Chris' friend from Canada. He pointed me in the direction of your Dean Campaign Chronicles. So exciting and enticing! Can't wait for the next installment...xokim
from pro-keds :
i'll bet the Bush campaigners all stay in suites.
from cosmokane :
i never expected to be going through the same thing as you. your thing has more ties that bind, though. i applaud your courage and wish you well in the world ahead. thank you for all the kind words from afar.
from callmekat :
Saw your posting on Toe's diary. When I broke up with my ex, I sold everything of his and it made me feel a lot better. Craig's list communities are the best place for that online. Give it a shot.
from xoxotoe :
on celebrating sluts: hooray, oh joy, sing "ho" for the life of a slut! my inner slut greets your inner slut heartily and with much yeehawing!!!
from salmondriver :
that IS a thrilling discovery! good for you.
from salmondriver :
so what did my makeout partner look like?
from salmondriver :
oh, didn't you know? i'm magic!
from cosmokane :
haha, you are so right. there's also boston's silicon valley, route 128. and i can't help but also think of the old texasraves crew who are now mostly tech workers and lj'ers. remember the muffled thump thump sound as one approached a party?
from xoxotoe :
your talent will bring you before kings. don't hesitate to share yourself artistically. i'm writing this as much to encourage myself as to encourage you. i hide out a lot. here's to unveiling in 2004. and simplifying (she pitches another garbage bag onto the curb)
from pro-keds :
being single has its perks, cali-girl!
from cosmokane :
wise words, indeed. best of luck with the moving process. keep playing that gee-tar, johnnie. - c

will the williamsburg chess club have to move yet again? perhaps the middle of the BQE would be quieter. perhaps a move back to supercore? i'd prefer la villeta!
from arajane :
happy birthday! sounds like you had a perfect evening.
from cosmokane :
awww. happy birthday! sounds like you had a good one - smells good *is* good :) - c
from cosmokane :
thanks for the suggestions! i haven't finished my column yet, but your ideas have been great food for thought :) - c
from playgurl1006 :
Wow!!! I wanted to see that one. He is so fine. Okay well I just found my new best friend. Lol. So, I'm going to check out your diary and stuff and I'm adding some entries to mine in just a few too. ~*Ashlee*~
from playgurl1006 :
OMG, you love Keanu too??? I do, anyways, I was looking through the people who listed Point Break as any of their favorite movies and I saw yours. Okay well get back to me or email me at [email protected]
from pro-keds :
great post today. good luck getting to Canada.
from cosmokane :
yes i do owe you a glass of good red stuff (and NOT my blood (i've been watching too many vampire movies lately)). do you have my cell phone #? i am mad busy this weekend, mostly with unfun stuff, but do hit me up. maybe sometime during next week? - c
from cosmokane :
wow, i feel like someone just wished me the loveless album. many thanks - you made my day :) -c
from cosmokane :
thanks for the thought, johnnie. i imagine there was a fair bit of east coast gloating over there... :P - c

YAY for art crawls. how many ballpoints did those pieces take? dang, and all i do is scribble. thanks for sharing this, i look forward to the next gallery update from you. (i enjoy vicarious art viewing for some reason, laziness? hm.) xxoo
from xoxotoe :
shut yo mouth! the o.c. !!! oh yeah, what is it about that trainwreck that you cannot stop watching? i tell you, i was torn the other nite when it was on at the same time as The Parkers. i just love that show. it was constantly flipflipflip with the remote that nite. yep yep
from cosmokane :
agreed. i believe that behind all american politics, policymaking, etc. lies the unspoken agendas of class warfare. how else to explain george w, etc.? - c
from pro-keds :
good times last night, airband buddy
from cosmokane :
"fear of a world without god" - what a wonderful idea. does the rise of machines imply a world without god? i'm not so sure. after all, in t3, the day the machines took over was called judgment day. if anything, the rise of machines implies humanity being forced to reckon with its sins. technology has made humanity more reckless in playing god, i think.
from tonightsleep :
i too am addicted to playing collapse on yahoo. unfortunately im not very good at it.
from smudge45 :
Hi! I love your diary and I would really like you to join my msn chat room!! Please go to: http://groups.msn.com/TheSeperatePsychos Thank you so much!!
from pro-keds :
yes to Bkyn only! I also want to talk to Frank_Bklyn tonight about having a Fotologger band night at Luna or Luxx or somewhere. Would you be down?
from pro-keds :
hey - didn't know yer a fellow blogger too!
from cosmokane :
well-written entry, johnnie. recently, i've been thinking about community also, as various scenes i have seen have splintered or fallen apart - techno, drum and bass, aggressive rock, etc. i haven't been able to come up with any good answers, though. unfortunately, i think that many underground scenes come from corporate interests seeking to create self-serving communities - e.g., electronica fad, dnb fad, bands that sound like nirvana fad, etc. only through loads of money and massive marketing do great numbers of people come to these causes. even though hordes of lame press, critics, and fadsters come running, normal curious people also come looking and hopefully can see through all the bs to find out the real deal (ie, a trickledown effect). basically, i think everything boils down to money. if a community requres too much money to join, people won't join. and there's not much money to be had nowadays. i was reading recently about the proposed gov. davis recall, and one phrase struck me - "the mechanism, the money, the anger" - it seems like these are the essential ingredients to community-building now.
from cosmokane :
wow, that entry was funny! i am only 40% hipster.
from xoxotoe :
"real things take time, are sometimes hard, and are usually worth it. faking it devalues the real thing, if only just a little. so quit glutting the market." call it out! keep it up, i love your blog!
from xoxotoe :
yeah, i KNEW you rocked. i knew it! waiting patiently for the wheatpaste fotos!!!!
from cosmokane :
dear johnnie: things i would fall into deeply: a wong kar wai movie. e with no comedown. the congregation in "the apostle" before robert duvall gets arrested. on a more earthly note, i would fall into djing if i could. such a rush. and you?
from xoxotoe :
hi, johnnieutah!! i'm intrigued by your fotolog! it is by your links that i found this website, and have recently made my own diaryland thang. about me: TOE, 32. graphic communications major. (secret longing to be a grafitti artist, have no balls. but stickering i can do.) off to work, now. thanks for inspiring. xoxotoe
from xoxotoe :
wow, this is all new to me. i liked kdunk's pix, and then there you were, too. loving street photog and blog too. i want to go color on things now. thanks for inspiration. nice to meet you. toe
from cosmokane :
johnnie - who said i was smelly??? just kidding :) i know what you mean. thanks for the thoughts. somehow i am reminded of that line from raising arizona: "sometimes it's a hard world for small things." i don't know why i just thought of that. sometimes one scratches away things that are good for oneself because they scratch one first. -c
from cosmokane :
haha, i wouldn't mind forgetting my first love, or electric guitar, at least. it was a kramer strat copy that i bought from a classmate in high school for the astronomical price of $300. it was white (ugh in retrospect), with black hardware. but because i was a metalhead/shred boy back then, i had the bridge ripped out and a floyd rose put in. since this involved taking a chunk of wood out of the guitar, it destroyed the guitar's tone. from that point on, the only real tone i could produce was this really nasal midrange, like a jon spencer type of tone. but at least i could whammy to my heart's delight :P...yes, opsound is interesting; i envision it just becoming sort of an open forum, because honestly i don't think much of the stuff on there has enough commercial potential to be seriously affected by all the copyright stuff. not that i care. one person at time, right?
from cosmokane :
so i just checked out the opsound site and was immediately drawn to the copyright-copyleft business (i sort of specialized in intellectual property, specifically copyright, in law school). the stuff on the opsound site is immensely complicated - did _you_ read through all that? i understand what's going on, but would anyone else? of course i work on original stuff, but i don't let anyone hear it, since i don't think it's good enough yet. the whole idea behind opsound is interesting, though i'm wondering how it actually plays out. i could steal and sample other people's music as will, as long as they didn't find out. maybe i am just jaded/cynical. and i am jealous you have a dearmond!
from cosmokane :
hi johnnieutah. just wanted to say that i've listened to "california," like, five times in a row, and it's just great each time. i don't know what opsound is about, but i noticed hellothisisalex was one of the artists. my cousin candy runs a record label called red antenna, and hellothisisalex was featured on a red antenna compilation. their website is www.redantenna.tv. keep them in mind, as they may be amenable to your sound :)

or is it internalizing an external conflict? you raised an issue in your entry that i thought of yesterday, independently. revolution can maybe be effected one person at a time. maybe the real war is human/creative/life vs. technology/consumerist/death. i remember after reading a book (calvino's "mr. palomar"), a friend told me that i sounded like a different, better person. i certainly didn't feel like a different person, but maybe subonsciously i was acting differently. unconscious change in this way is the most genuine, and has to work on an individual basis. sometimes, though, i get frustrated with this and feel like art should/needs to use the technology/consumerist angle to hook people - in other words, to fight fire with fire. finally, you raised another good issue at the end of your note. if one complains about the world enough, one begs the question, "so what are _you_ doing about it?" to be honest, i don't know. i've been djing dnb for a while, but have been experiencing real doubts about its relevance in the environment where i live. that's a whole essay there that i don't want to get started on. but i do think about the issue a lot. i don't have a video camera (i'm actually not a very visually-oriented person). somehow i don't feel the need to walk around making field recordings of my environment. why capture nature with a machine? maybe text is the simplest, purest art, and to honor that, i keep my journal all-text.
from cosmokane :
going back to the art thing - so what does it mean for art to be "pure"? i felt like when art stopped depicting the trainwrecks and atrocities, stopped reflecting the actual world - that's when it lost its social relevance. i don't mean that art should necessarily be representational or even topical. it's just that the notion of "pure" art raises red flags in me about art becoming insular, inbred, and irrelevant to those not in the inner circles. i'm not sure if art can _ever_ be "pure," anyways. every canvas has a cost; and what is an artist without an audience?
from cosmokane :
wow, what a great entry. i'm a vegetarian and for some time have been mostly successful in following a low-carb diet. there are plenty of meat substitutes out there, and soy can be a good source of protein. watch out for the cholesterol in the eggs, though - just 1 is almost enough cholesterol for a whole day. also, giving up beer for wine is trading up, i think :) stay healthy. now i'll respond to your other note!
from cosmokane :
you raise a good point. but i wonder if art can hijack some of the bandwidth of popular media. photography is an artform just like painting, and it can "capture" the trainwrecks and atrocities like painting used to. people do pay attention to photographs (and moving pictures). it's just that photographers are too often employees of newspapers and magazines who exercise the final editorial decisions. when i think about this stuff, i just get depressed. can you think of any solutions? (an extremely large and unanswerable question, i know :)
from cosmokane :
hi johnnieutah. you may be amused to find out that my design, in fact, was stolen from elsewhere. i took a preexisting template and tweaked the hell out of it. the template was nothing much to look at it, but i changed it enough, and the result was far away enough from the original, so i felt i didn't have to credit the original designer. i will try the spring pie recipe sometime :) -c
from tonightsleep :
you seem interesting.
