By the way, LOVE the Peter Gabriel selections. Hee...
from heapofimogen :
Mmhmm, you're so right. The world is full of snobs. I have to say, though, that my neighbor is aware of what he's doing, and he knows how much of an issue it is with me -- and HE likes the odd ABBA song, so it's not like anyone deserves to be singled out when there are all sorts of musical skeletons in all sorts of closets. I've never heard of the Rheostatics, but that's probably because I'm only Canadian by association *giggle* We're gonna have to start making little top 10 lists of bands or musicians that we want to encourage others to hear. Your list would probably kick start a lot of new musical love affairs in my life, and mine will...well...allow you to see the genius of Kylie. :D
from heapofimogen :
Oops, I forgot. It's Helena Bonham Carter in the movie Howards End. I heart them both!
from heapofimogen :
I don't think your rituals are silly at all, especially the physical ones. It's good to be able to meet that challenge head on from year to year, and to not get wrapped up in petty competition. They're missing the point...but I guess we take pleasure from different things in life, and as long as you meet up afterward and spend a nice eve together, that's all that matters. Sushi, unless it's California style...no comment. What a beautiful day you spent, merci for writing about it :)
from heapofimogen :
Eek! You read my thingie while I was revamping! I guess you know now...flowers everywhere, as well as a scene from my favorite movie -- I'll give you TWO dollars if you can name the actress or film. Thank you for your compliment -- it's nice to write for such an inspiring audience :)
from heapofimogen :
Holy notes, batman! I guess I'll just add my gushing ode to a friend on top of the heap. Merci for introducing me to this!
from zeroreverb7 :
Owen! Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!! :)!!! hugs peace
from less-than3 :
i have the weirdest dreams that mix the randomest people together from all phases from my life. i doubt that people from grammar school remember who i am, let alone dream about me. but yet i can remember most of my 5th grade classmates' full names, and they pop up in my dreams from time to time. weird.
from prettytear :
*raises hand*

I'm tagging you to write five wierd things about yourself. :D
from less-than3 :
happy chrismahanakwanzakah! :)
from sunnydayz :
a friend of mine is about to start telling a story for each bike he has owned. that instantly made me think of you and some of the writing projects you have taken on. Check it out at http://pjaysperusings.blogspot.com/
from stereogirl :
Hawksley Workman, am I right? I hope you can find something less tacky, if that is possible.
from stereogirl :
You have to go to Chez Piggy if you're going to Kingston (I assume that's where you're going?) Good luck with the exam!
from less-than3 :
meeping. it CAN be road-runner-ish. but it's also just a giddy sorta noise. it doesn't even have to sound like "meep". just the verbal equivalent of a;lsdkfja;lskdjfaOMGWTFLOLBBQ!!11!! :)
from beautiflntmr :
I wish I could get things for a dollar. About the only things that are less than a dollar round these parts now are individual tootsie rolls, mints and reese's mini-cups.
from beautiflntmr :
Hey, if you would, could you change my link in the "design" link on your page?
from less-than3 :
i was wondering where you've been...
from zeroreverb7 :
Owen! has anyone told you today how Wonderful you are??? Well. You are. :) thanks for the Note! (you are so way cool!) hugs Peace
from less-than3 :

from stereogirl :
Happy Birthday Owenmeany99! (Us Fire Horses have to stick together...)
from less-than3 :
you KNOW you're not the only neurotic over-self-analyzer. :)
from sunnydayz :
Hillside is particularily amazing this year!! I am jealous. There is so much worth seeing but...I am such a huge Buck 65 fan, that guy does a live performance like nobodies business. And Luke Doucet and Stars I go to everytime they are in town, and always am glad. I had no clue D. Rangers are playing. I think they play that neck of the woods alot. And sadly I have never seen In Flight Safety live. Have fun.
from less-than3 :
yikes. i hope you have plenty of neosporin.
from sunnydayz :
3. should be Garden State and 4. is Aside. and great list
from stereogirl :
Um, <i>The Matrix</i> <i>Austin Powers Goldmember</i> and a Weakerthans song. I don't know the other two. Good lists, though. Where did you meet the authors?
from less-than3 :
ps: i love reading your list of things you love.
from less-than3 :
so many people are! if i left, i just don't know where i'd go to...
from less-than3 :
i adore your writing.
from zeroreverb7 :
Id like to send you a virutal hug if thats ok? :) Hugs Hugs Hugs (remember how awesome you are!) Peace
from sunnydayz :
beautiful words remind me to explore this world with open eyes and soul
from incinerated :
The Hip covered the Weakerthans? If you find this gem, please let me know!
from incinerated :
People that are turning 25 were born in the 80's, wow, I didn't even know that. That actually makes ME feel old and I'm 22. Don't ask!
from ash-kumar :
You know where you have to come if you want your ego stroked ..*wink wink*..love your diary owen...here's hoping that many a pen suffers defeat at your hands...and many lovely words flow out of them...take care
from incinerated :
Love the new layout.
from zeroreverb7 :
Nice New Layout! and by the way..you are wonderful...:) Hugs Peace
from incinerated :
That is such an excellent book.
from zeroreverb7 :
Owen....see...thats another reason why Hockey is the greatest sport Ever. And..would you mind throwing a few pucks at my head please??? You Are Awesome! Hugs Hugs Peace
from incinerated :
That's a great book. I met a real-life Christopher over the summer. That book in combination with the boy brought about tons of inspiration for me. In everything.
from sunnydayz :
aah, but you talk about weather using weakerthans and tielli references so it is all good. delightful in fact.
from zeroreverb7 :
hugs hugs hugs hugs hugs hugs (to the awesome you) :) peace
from zeroreverb7 :
you write so well ...(and you are awesome by the way..) Hugs Hugs:) Peace
from stereogirl :
Your story reminds me of Franzen's article in the Cartoon issue of the New Yorker from a few weeks ago. Definitely worth reading. Seasons Greetings and here comes the snow...
from musicus-deus :
There's always something you find to regret when someone dies, even if it happens years after their death.
from incinerated :
Happy holidays!
from zeroreverb7 :
I love that Movie and that Band and Yow Are Awesome!!! Hugs Peace
from stereogirl :
A late thanks for the list! And my friend Ben saw the PS this spring and said they were awesome live...
from sunnydayz :
time changing things is so hard to wrap my mind around. I want it to be simple, it never is. and I really don't want to diss a band which I still think has much talent and beauty but the Weakerthans are playing 2 shows this weekend. And I have to say, I am finding the whole thing very disheartening. But if I can just stay focused on the music and lyrics and leave all the other stuff out, because it matters less it will be ok.
from spiltsville :
I agree wholeheartedly with your latest Rheostatics entry. I've had the gratifying experience of witnessing some non-fans finally get their artistic genius. I also went to one of their concerts alone, and it was still 100% worthwhile. Digging the music, h.
from incinerated :
Don't you dare change.
from sunnydayz :
Yay Bo Sox. That was crazy. Rheo's are playing here at the end of the month, it will be my first time seeing them.
from stereogirl :
What cds are you getting rid of? Send me a list at my email - stanza_sister@yahoo.com - thanks!
from incinerated :
I know what you mean about the crying thing. I hadn't cried for a while and didn't even cry during a time where everyone else was. I thought something was wrong with me until it all came rushing out randomly. I saw an elderly person crossing the street at the wrong time and heard all the cars beeping and honking. I don't know why, but that seemed to be the reason for the floodgates to swing open. Weird. I'm glad that young girl is okay.
from zeroreverb7 :
you're beautiful Owen..Hugs..peace
from stereogirl :
Happy Belated Birthday! What books did you get while away?
from incinerated :
Well, let's see. It's either happy early birthday or happy belated. Either way, I hope it was/is good. Summer seems to be the season to make mixed CDs.
from musicus-deus :
Rather dumbfounded that you added me. A bit flattered, perhaps. How's the B&L doing lately?
from incinerated :
That "soundtrack" is a good idea. I think there was something similar to it floating around the net one time. It took me forever to finish (they had stuff like "opening credts", "love theme", etc) and my goal was never to duplicate an artist, but I think I may have failed at that. I can't remember what I saved it as, going to go search for it now. Thanks for the addition to your favourite list.
from sunnydayz :
"poor english was not my first language." Brilliant. So is the Comment dit-on thing to save the quarter. As it turns out, evident in my diary, poor english is my first language. I don't speak any other. My life long poor grammar and spelling is now paired with broken english I have learned from my clients at work.
from spiltsville :
Sorry about your Leafs. But now I need all your superstition energies directed at the Flames.
from sunnydayz :
because winning is good here is my best to the leafs. go leafs go.
from sunnydayz :
so you seem to have launched a mini guestbook go leafs go campaign. Hope it works. Go Leafs Go.
from sunnydayz :
my sister has totally gone supersticious like you were talking about it is crazy. But it made the Flames and Leafs win so apparently not that crazy.
from incinerated :
*high fives* - and you know what that was for! Philly, anyone? ;)
from sunnydayz :
so odd, becasue the other night i was at this show where a girl played a song that she realized after was for George Harrison. Only thing was both she and the song were so dreadfully boring I can't remember either.
from sunnydayz :
hey, my two fav.leaf fans!! this is a glorious time of year b/c of sun and all that but even more b/c the Jays season has begun, Hockey Playoffs and NBA wrapping up. There is a way to swing it to that with the massive amounts of commercials in hockey and the slowness of baseball and the fact that basketball is always pretty much the same that if you are good with a remote you can watch all three at once without missing a thing.
from incinerated :
My parents used to take my brother and I to a Jays game at least three times a month during the summer. We would always be in the "cheapie" (5 bucks) seats in the 500 level (at the Skydome) and we'd stock up on junk food and all. We had a place we always went to dinner. It was really great. Those were the days of Alomar, Gruber, and I remember some incident with Stottlemyre too (was it Gatorade? or water? something like that) And then that strike happened and everyone seemed to lose interest. It was a shame because I remember being too young to stay up to watch them win the '93 series, but my parents came into my room to wake me up just to let me know they had won. Damn, your entry brought back a lot of good memories. That was defintely a highlight during my childhood, without a doubt. Annnnd, since I made my way over here from Miss Sunny's guestbook to see what a fellow Leaf fan was writing about, I'll say it again, go leafs go. Hope you're in a great place when they kick some Senator ass tonight. :)
from sunnydayz :
oh, now i am in a sadies mood. I think they are playing here in a bit, I better find out.
from sunnydayz :
ok you probably know this already but i just heard the 'stats will be the concert break on DNTO this weekend.
from hipsterbingo :
seen any hipsters lately. what about a 70's ski vest? Do you dig this look or hate it?
from sunnydayz :
ah, but the ones who do read 'em, love 'em.
from stereogirl :
I think failure and success are both relative - if you learn something & progress from what you do, then that's the best. BTW, I tried to sign your guestbook but got the diaryland mainpage instead (I don't know if you knew that already, but...)
from sunnydayz :
I don't think I have ever actually skated on a backyard rink. I'm jealous! But the river is frozen and callin' my name so that will do.
from fan4 :
I'm currently reading a library book titled "Sisterhood Situation". It's about 4 women in college (they're Seniors), and the book deals with the friendship between the quartet, the lives of the individual women, and a little bit of romance. I'm enjoying this book a lot. (I checked out 3 library books during my last visit, and "Sisterhood Situation" is my favorite out of all of them.)
from fan4 :
I didn't like Down with Love either. I couldn't believe that every event, down to the very small detail, was mapped out in advance.
from zeroreverb7 :
hey Owen...you know my favorite book is the alchemist by paulo coehlo....because it is about the soul...as the greatest treasure we can ever find...and cherish...i hope you and your family are well...hugs hugs peace :)
from sunnydayz :
i can totally relate to being to imtimidated to speak, except my ridiculousness in this matter is not just in my dreams. I have very much frozen in front of David Suzuki and John K. so upsetting. Great dream though!!
from fan4 :
oops! I left a small piece out when trying to help you with links. I'll try again. <a href="URL of the website">name you give to the link</a>
from fan4 :
"<a href="URL"(name you want to give to the link)</a>" (If you take away the outer quotation marks, this should help with making links.)
from fan4 :
I'm happy March isn't associated with an ugly brown. March is my birth-month.
from sunnydayz :
good call on adding York to your reading list, you know I see her around town chilling with John K. Oh and I luuv Paul Kariya.
from fan4 :
Why do you associate the month of March with the color brown?
from fan4 :
Weather people have said there'd be heavy snow where I live, but so far they've been wrong.
from sunnydayz :
yeah for roots. We had Futo Maki (or Maki Sushi) - his is way better than at the Sushi Bar. Three kinds of Sashimi, Tempura and what we always grew up calling purses but he grew up calling ugei sushi, but I found it at resturants as inari.
from zeroreverb7 :
Hugs Hugs Hugs Hugs Hugs Hugs Hugs Hugs Hugs :) Happy New Year :) Peace
from moodymelinda :
hi there....just want to wish you all the best in 2004. Happy New Year!
from sunnydayz :
Merry Christmas
from fan4 :
I love writing letters to people. I have several penpals.
from sunnydayz :
yeah that (the digital house) could work for me. The phone thing kills me, the problems we create in solving others are hilarious. There is talk that cell phones will be banned from my gym to prevent people with cameras on there phones from sneaking them in and taking pic.'s
from sunnydayz :
he really is a genius, he does thing on guitars I had no idea could be done. And he has one on the most beautiful guitars ever
from sunnydayz :
actually what would work better is a 2 hour intermission. The party could start, everyone (but me) could say something interesting and then we could break for two hours while I came up with a witty reply, and then we could begin again.
from moodymelinda :
The headline about having a party - everyone come one hour late, made me laugh. Because that's really what I think sometimes when I have a party. I tend to put preparing for the party off untill I can't do that anymore, and then I run around in panic to get things done. And really....having them come one hour later would help a lot ....Then you had me laugh again.......as I saw that was not what you ment....oh well......your entry was funny anyway...thanks
from spiltsville :
I'm definitely joining that club. And I guessed right too.
from sunnydayz :
OK, I got it. but I cheated (google). Although I suspected correctly. Based on the artists you have mentioned and the use of the word privy. I always have the perfect thing to say two hours that's why I have a diary, to log all the great things I coulda shoulda said. and for work, I hate when one thing prevents me form enjoying the other stuff at work. SO here's to hoping this project is outa sight and mind soon enough.
from sunnydayz :
I'm so with you on the sign thing, it is crazy how much we need justification like it really changes anything. No matter what signs we chose it us who makes things different not the signs.
from sunnydayz :
the desk i am currently in is the upstairs of a town house transformed into a resource centre. The desk is in the corner and has the computer and printer on it, a juice glass, a bottle of juice, a toque, a wrapper from my lunch and 6 piles of paper becasue I hate working on one thing at a time.
from spiltsville :
I love that man's writing. I didn't know about Songbook though. I'm going to buy it today.
from sunnydayz :
that sounds like a great project and very cool if some of it wound up in these halls. oh, and nobody famous you rock for getting to two Weakerthan shows on this tour.
from nobodyfamous :
neat-o to see some more entries from you nowadays. i adore your writing style, by the way, i'm not quite certain if i've mentioned that before. i saw the weakerthans in toronto + ottawa on the tour. it was quite the show... take care. xoxox.
from sunnydayz :
wow that was some clever rhyming by Hawksley. I have heard that song quoted 3 times lately, crazy.
from sunnydayz :
"Around midnight, the headline act came out, and started with Last Call. Samson always seems to have a smirk on his face, like he knows something we don't. It's true, of course, he knows much that we don't." Excellent!! that is so true. I love that he dolled out $3.30. As for the encore, One Great City, I think he may puposely over-exagerate the smirk because (at least out here) there is alot of controversy over how people interpret that song. An hour set, eh. a little short but I hate sets that go longer than 2 hours.
from stereogirl :
When you say smirky, do you mean he seemed sarcastic? GOD I wish I could go see them.
from sunnydayz :
so? How was it?
from sunnydayz :
by the way excellent post. and did you check out the Weakerthans reviews in Maxim and Playboy. OK there sucess is starting to scare me. http://www.epitaph.com/bands/index.php?id=321&ed_id=460#ed_460
from sunnydayz :
I've been listening today too, they are so damn good. I did listen to that stripped down stuff - I'd seen JKS preform that stuff live around town a bit too. And you are wise not a geek for purchasing tickets early it is way smarter than getting shut out like us. And Spiltz I knew I should have sent you money for the ticket, but I guess I was broke too. oh well.
from spiltsville :
No Weakerthans for me. They were here on Monday and the show sold out before I got paid.
from sunnydayz :
Happy Going to the Weakerthans Day!! I know John K might roll his eyes at this but I'm so glad that they exist.
from spiltsville :
There is so much great music in your second-last entry, and the woman across from me is listening to that one Evanescence song on repeat. The contrast is stunning. Anyway, enjoy the show tonight (?). I've just posted the lyrics to "Left and Leaving" on my cubicle wall.
from sunnydayz :
hey, so my sister didn't get tickets either. I can't believe that the Weakerthan's are selling out in advance in Ontario too. They rock and people are cluing in. I guess it is a good thing. So now you have to have fun for both of us.
from sunnydayz :
The way friends change, disappear and the people who end up being closer than predicted really is a mystery. Anyway, do you have a Weakerthans Concert coming up, they hit Ontario this week right? Oh, and I just checked the website, it is finally updated. Have you checked - I haven't really explored but it looks good from first glance
from moodymelinda :
i agree with your thoughts about friends.....some stay put while others come and go.....but still they add something to my life...and even though we might just run into eachother briefly its good to know that they are out there .... i always tend to think that i dont want to throw myself at people......i want to know if they like my company or not.......i dont want to be a person that glues myself to people...so if i am not sure about it then i leave it up to them ....and by doing so i sometimes make it appear as though i couldnt care less.....yes i know....sounds nuts....but who said i wasnt?
from sunnydayz :
my biggest dilemma in life, the hardest thing for me to swallow was the realization that I can't do everything I want to. Sometimes I just have to chose between doing two really great things and somethings I want to do I have to let go. And it sucks. Especially when it is responsibility I have to give into.
from moodymelinda :
hi Owen! well....thats all i had to say really.......we talked some time ago......just after i read the book about O.M.....anyway.......i like your diary....
from sunnydayz :
I think I've listened to the Carnations before and enjoyed them, oh and I just got this note "DNTO music tipster Bartley Kives has the goods on the Carnations, the latest Canuck indie sensations." that will be in the first hour of this weeks show.
from stereogirl :
Hi, I just added your diary to my list, if you want to ask me 5 questions, I'd be happy to answer them...
from sunnydayz :
Yeah, I go by myself alot too, but the way it is here I always run into people I know - well it's kinda I keep showing up at shows and start recognizing people and then act like we are friends. It will be such a good show, you could go with Oscar the Grouch and still have fun. Are the Carnations and Fembots opening?
from sunnydayz :
WooHoo, for Weakerthan tickets. Have double fun for me, since I missed the show.
from sunnydayz :
2.Yes, but sometimes I'm a plan-breaker so I just hope it all evens out. 3.mmm...but it's always worth it. 6. People always annoy me soon enough. 7. Sometimes but at other times I can't get just 10.
from zeroreverb7 :
All of that has happend to me! All of it!! good to read you again Hugs Peace
from sunnydayz :
I suck. I keep forgetting to buy my ticket to the Weakerthans and now it is sold out.
from sunnydayz :
hmm, it seems as if I used your notes as my social planner. Anywayz. I have not really answered about my feeling on Reconstruction Site. I put it away for most of last week but pulled it out again last night. A few songs were so amazing, I continually sit in awe of the writing. A few, mostly Hospital Vespers (I think that is what it is called), freaked me out a little. Probably largely due to my fear of them signing with Epitaph. Happy as I am for them. As for friends I know what you mean my friends are pretty out of touch on the stuff I'm into. They'd prefer talk about cars and airplanes and I don't.
from sunnydayz :
There is amazing music on tour right now. I can't afford it all. So I'll get to Tielli (free), Calexico (I'm working it), Weakerthans, Sexsmith (I hope) and likely Luther Right and the Wrongs. And I don't know what to do about Hawkesly, I may skip it. What is with both him and the Weakerthans playing horrible venues. Anyway I hope you get to all your shows, I'm a bit of a loner when it comes to music - I am just as content to go by myself. Hey next time you tag me you should check out the 'you' clickable on the bottom of my page.
from zeroreverb7 :
Hope everything is OK email if you need anything Hugs Peace
from nobodyfamous :
aye to the weakerthans + ron hawkins. ron hawkins fans are hard to come by nowadays, but the w.thans fans are a dime a dozen. this isn't to say one has anything to do with the other, nor the validity of either band, merely a thought. you seem keen. keep up the good fight. xoxox.
from simon-lagrue :
Congratulations on publication, Owen!
from sunnydayz :
just caught your note, can't wait for the Weakerthans CD this week. Tielli has a new one two, but I just forgot what it is called.
from sunnydayz :
OK, I caught up a bit. I enjoyed your diary (especially about power and water - I have to say from time to time grass scares me). Guess you aren't in the 'peg. But Chis and kate played here last week and I missed it. But I heard the Jayhawks tonight. They are amazing. So to sum up fun diary and you have great taste in music.
from zeroreverb7 :
:) ask me :) hugs peace
from sunnydayz :
hey, I admit I haven't really read your entries just the 5 q's. Does your great taste in musice mean you are a 'pegger? Did you catch Kate Fenner last night? I missed it and am wondering how the show went.
from zeroreverb7 :
dude..the nieghbor's wife is just checking you out;) Hugs :)
from zeroreverb7 :
Owen..What an Awesome Entry!Hugs Peace
from girlsdontcry :
Well, you're away, but I promise you I'm writing this on August 11, and I'm saying happy birthday.
from girlsdontcry :
Hello there, I have "All Families Are Psychotic" but I haven't read it (that's a bit of a bad habit of mine). I'm not familiar with Paul Quarrington, I have to say. And as for the CD thing ... I remember reading some statistic that the majority of CDs that people buy are only listened to something like 2.3 times, and that most people just listen to some small percentage of the CDs they own. My birthday was August 3 -- when's yours?
from zeroreverb7 :
Owen...its awesome to visit your diary...you are so great...and the template..is Beautiful! :) Hugs Peace
from thatmarygirl :
i *heart* owen meany.
from birdley :
owen, i like your journal entries. i cant wait to read more. you seem like a very interesting person. i agree with you about the internet chat stuff. just as long we still have friends in the flesh things will be okay. i cant imagine having friends i never see. things would get wierd after awhile. --themotherpearl2000
from zeroreverb7 :
You are absolutely right about the internet..and being able to cut through alot of superfluous things...:) very cool entry :) Hugs Peace
from girlsdontcry :
Hey Nostradamus! I mean Owen. My friend promised me a proof of that new Coupland, so I'm looking forward to that. And I used to have John Irving on my list, but ... I don't know, I suddenly felt like Charlotte Bronte just HAD to be there. I still love Irving though. Welcome to Diaryland, by the way, and I hope you enjoy your stay.
from girlsdontcry :
My birthday's in August too, happy birthday. (Zeroreverb7 said to come here)... hi!
from zeroreverb7 :
:) August is orange to me..probably because of those Harvest moons...:) Hugs
