Sorry, I mean't if they *can't* be open-minded and objective...
from bluelights :
People can't accept raw truths. I've learned that the hard way. Don't ruin their happy little visions, right? Pfft. If people aren't open-minded and can be objective and look outside themselves and their situations, they deserve the problems they create for themselves. Don't feel bad. You're not the first blasted for being an opinionated woman.

You think America has had it bad? What about the Uk with the IRA? We've had it bad, especially when u guys were fucking funding them!
from j-money :
You tell anyone you want to to fuck off. You've got the right. And you're right, it didn't affect us the same way, not at all. You're my hero. For saying "fuck you" when everyone is tiptoeing around being ultra polite. And for the courage to bring a new life into this fucked up world. You have the courage to hope. It's more than a lot of people have.
from thisisjohn :
i like what you said to middle america.

9-11: Riot, I know you don't want this. But.... you were the diary I read and kept to all of September and October last year. You helped me to understand the feelings of someone REALLY THERE as opposed to the feelings of someone like me... a chick in Mississippi. However, I could tell you of the horrors of the West Nile virus. Anyway... Things are running through my head to say to you right now. But I don't think any of them will help. But I am glad you said what you did. It's true. So very true.
from vegavid :
Congratulations, Riot! I was so happy to hear about Maggie. You're going to be a great mother. Take care. Jamie
from marn :
Awwwwww, congratulations! Maggie is a lovely name. I'm so glad all went well (and yes, I agree with you 100 per cent, it doesn't matter HOW the baby is birthed, not one bit). A little mommy hint (they may have something better now) -- my nipples got really tender when I was nursing, too, but at the suggestion of the visiting nurse I started putting a tiny bit of pure lanoline on (you can get it at drugstores). It really helped until the nipples toughtened up on their own. It's natural; it doesn't hurt the baby at all. PLUS you get that slightly sheepy smell every woman yearns for, right? Mmmmmm sheepy.

i have to say, i *always* got a seat on the train when i was knocked up. and if we're going to get into the class/race generalizations, i think a lot of it has to do with where i lived at the time: inwood. i was usually travelling between hell's kitchen and inwood on the 1 or a train, and lemme just say that working-class hispanics are way more likely to stand for a pregnant woman than white yuppies. rachel

Hi. The images are also missing from the New York City site because I moved my site. If you have a place to store them I will be happy to move them for you. And if you ever feel like a new design for this diary I would love to make you one. : )
from monkieygirl :
Don't worry about the spelling thing, my daughters first name is Faulkner. No fears with middle names.
from lucidjelly :
Hi, there. Just checking in to make sure you're alright. Perhaps you've been occupied with opening season events...
from uncajoey :
I dunno about best/worst borough.. as each borough can look like absolute shit as well as its own sublime charms.. if you know where to look. Looking at Staten Island, specially as an outsider (and I dont use that term lightly) driving past and through it - it would look pretty shitty. But so does the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens if all youre doing is driving by on the tri-borough. Staten Islanders, the natives who talk with that funny mix of Brooklynese and New Englandah, fervently wish that people take the dim view of the place and decide not to move there. However, if you do know Staten Island (which I did shacking up with a friend there for a coupla months) it is NOT surprising that Guiliani and many of the well heeled have homes there. Personally, if I had to buy a home in one of the boroughs.. Staten Island would be my first and second choice. Brooklyn and Manhattan the next. And no, I aint gonna tell ya where in Staten Island... Like the natives.. I kinda WANT people to think Staten Island is a shitt hole so that it stays affordable. :-)
from fkedupchicka :
lol...oh isn't it the funniest thing when everyone enters the train and it's like the fuckin musical chairs???
from innerlemming :
you neglected one really important point re the south and pregnancy: it's too damn hot for those of us who aren't pregnant, I can't imagine being pregnant AND sweating in 100% humidity! mmm. fried chicken.
from riot718 :
okay. i have been misunderstood. all i was saying was that to say that women's hockey shouldn't allow checking because of a fear that short girls will get hurt is bullshit. if short girls can't take it they shouldn't play. sorry. i don't think you should bend rules in sports to accomodate physical differences. if they can, more power to 'em. but no one said let's lower the basket in the NBA so men under 6 foot can play. they just said "hey, if you're under 6 foot, you better be mugsy boggs." all i was trying to say was that rules based on height differences are bullshit. if you're 5'2" and you can take a hit from a woman with 8 inches and 50 pounds on you. GREAT. if you can't, we shouldn't change the sport to accomodate you. sorry it came out harsher than i intended. i spent way too much time in a penalty box and being called an oaf, ogre, and giant.
from rightangle :
whoa with the hostility against short girls. i'm 5'2" and I play rugby. full fuckin' contact. Hell, I say those of us close to the ground take hits better--less room to fall through. Maybe the rule-makers should ditch the sexist explanations rather than cutting all the short girls.
from dropdeadred :
ahhh i can't believe i missed that game!!! i haven't been watching the olympics because most of the sports piss me off, but hockey is the best sport. if i could actually skate well i'd be an ice hockey goalie. but hey now! you said short girls shouldn't play but i'm about as short as you get (5'3) and i'm a field hockey goalie and knock 6 foot girls flat on their asses if they get in my way. just let every girl play normal hockey..the little ones will just have to deal. i do with field hockey, they'll have to for ice hockey. heh..but it's definately cool to see someone so into women's hockey! =D
from taliana1 :
I agree--let them play hockey, for goodness sakes. We are fragile flowers. Canada definitely deserved to win that game. It didn't even begin to get exciting until the end--the US should have played with that fire from the beginning if they wanted to win it. ;)
from heatherc :
I'm so happy to read about your pregnancy - congratulations!!
from jujitsulady :
I hear that Debussy and Mozart are great for stimulating the kiddie after about 14 weeks - no need to sit next to the speaker or anything, but do make sure the bass is not too loud or it seems to upset them. If classical ain't your thing, apparently trance dance music works well too... all knowledge gleaned from a posse of procreators that seem to surround me! Keep well...
from prospero :
I'm enjoying your recent posts. They're giving me food for thought.
from missvespa :
Some people from Boston need to remove the we're-not-NYC chip from their collective shoulder. Geez Louise. Why shouldn't everyone be happy for the Pats?
from taliana1 :
*grin* After the Patriots won, I turned to my fiance and said, "Remember when the Patriots sucked more than the Cardinals? Maybe there is some hope for our team after all!" I always love when the underdog wins it. Yay!
from dropdeadred :
i can defiately relate to what you are saying. except that i felt that way after sept. 11th. i felt like people were going to come after me because i'm jewish because there were huge rumors going around that the terrorists did this to get back at jews. i was so scared i cried myself to sleep every night. i get so upset when people don't understand that i can be german and jewish. no teenagers where i live understand that being german is a heritage and not all germans are nazis. my RELIGION is judaism, but it isn't everything i'm about. i'm not even sure if i believe half of it. other people don't realize i'm jewish because i look so irish so i hear what they really think about jews. sometimes i wish i didn't know their real feelings. sometimes i just want to be one thing and just known for that one thing.
from taliana1 :
Oi--I can identify with the first part of what you wrote about--I also never felt like I quite fit in anywhere. But when I learned about the Holocaust, I was never frightened that it would happen to me. Until I read what you wrote, I'd never thought about kids today being afraid that the Nazi's would come get them. That is something that a child--well, no one for that matter--should have to worry about. Unfortunately there is too much hate in this world. (Sorry if this didn't make much sense...I'm sick and feeling a little loopy.)
from jujitsulady :
Now I'm hungry for a slice of Noo Yawk pastrami - thanks for giving me a hundred good reasons to think about coming over from Oz again this year. BTW, a friend of mine worked in the WTC but happened to be away on a business trip that fateful day. She affirms her luck, and her love of New York every day now. Love your stuff!
from missvespa :
I meant hyumah.
from missvespa :
Adam Sandler was raised in New Hampshire, though, and he's a New England boy through and through. He's gut that wicked sensa humor.
from bearclau :
your words on WTC are very moving. i even caught myself swallowing back a lump in my throat. ...here's to someday waking up from this bad dream...
from xcitygrrlx :
I swear I think they pick the same cities for everyone. I'm always left frowning and going, "Hartford? Huh? Chatanooga? Little Rock??? But I'm from NYC!!" Anyway I've decided I'm moving to Boston, and I will finally meet the fabulous Cubiclegirl (who, by the way, told me I should get in touch with you so you'd have more friends who have kids), and I think you should come along!
from natashka :
no new yorkie for me either, and i specifically requested, cold, big, theatre, and jewish. what a bunch o dweebs. i wrote them a note and gave them a piece of my mind.
from lady4eyes :
They didn't put me in New York either, and I live in Brooklyn. But I was pretty adamant about warm weather (wishful thinking). Most of my ideal cities were in California the Southwest, with my top one being Honolulu. However, it did suggest Boston, which is even colder than New York. It also didn't suggest Philadelphia, which is a way cooler place than Little Rock, which it suggested as number 4. Maybe cost had something to do with it. p.s. I like your diary. the layout is great.
