when i was in high school, my parents didn't encourage me to go to college either. education was just not that much of a priority to them or to the community that i grew up in (conservative christian, four-square, non-denominational). so, i put myself through school.
i'm not sure why, when no one i knew valued it. I AM SO GLAD I DID. first of all, even though my parents helped me very little, its funny how quickly they became proud of the fact that i was in school (i was bitter about that for awhile, but eventually worked it out). second of all and most importantly, post-high school education is often just as much about the intangible skills as it is about the tangible skills. You probably don't need a degree, but what it will give you is the time to explore your art, your creativity, and to collaborate with other artists, and learn about the craft, the art, and dig into the left side of your brain and the right side of your brain in a concentrated devoted way that someday you will realize is a luxury.
Go. Chances are you won't get this chance again. Go now while your responsibilities are minimal, and you can live on a shoestring. don't wait for anyone to give you permission.
Sure, pray about it and listen to your heart, but I will bet you God wants you to expand yourself as a human being, to grow, to experience all of life and to use your natural skills and talents He gave you to the best of your ability. What is that Bible parable about the dude who buries his talents and when the master comes back he has the exact same amount as when he left? Don't be the girl who takes the safest route, I don't think that's who you are. Take the risk.
that's just my opinion.

Who's to say you have to go to school to be an AA? Are you kidding? There are AA positions at all types of places, that do /not/ require a degree of any sort. Sure, the pay isn't as good, but for now, it would work.

Hello, I noticed your post on "myownjourney" this morning and followed the link to your site. . .. and now see that I rather disappeared for awhile. Your writing did that. As did your photography on your other page. Both are exceptional. I have put you on my buddy list. I hope that's okay, if not, let me know, and I will remove it. ---Sam

Hey! Your mom went to MY college!! Hi... I'm Stephanie. :) I pop in and out of your diary sometimes--I'm friends with DJ; I think she led me to you--and I was just looking back through your entries (actually, to find out when you saw Phantom of the Opera, because you had a quote from it on a recent entry and I LOVE that movie) and found the entry (March 1st) where you said your mom went to a Nazarene college in Idaho. That's where I go! :D

I feel very special for being called out in your diary. Sorry I didn't call you back, I got home at midnight and promptly went to bed. Then yesterday I had class, work, class again with a test, then I came home for an hour and went to bed. It was my sister's birthday, and I barely saw her. So please don't feel like I don't want to talk, life has just been throwing a whole lot at me and I'm having to change things around in order to catch it all.

It's none of my business, but I thought I'd give you my thoughts anyway because it sounds like you really care about this guy. It sounds to me like he's no longer joking. Putting it in a joking form makes it easier to feel out the situation without putting yourself on the line. I haven't been able to observe the situation myself, obviously, but from everything you've described, this guy is serious. If you want to remain friends with him, you should probaby consider how to back out of these "joking" situations. If you don't, he's going to get hurt. I'm sorry if my note is out of line, but I didn't want to see what looks like a valuable friendship go to pot because I didn't say anything. If you ever want to talk about it, feel free to e-mail me.

That made me chuckle, because I have a class on the third floor M/W/F, and my friend and I always joke how it is our workout for the day to get up there, probably partly because we have to hurry up the stairs to make sure we get to class on time. All of this to say, good job on the working out. I hope you can see the payoffs soon, and let us know how it's going, too.

Awww, Omaha is adorable. I thought I wanted a dog a few years back so I got a mini-dachshund named Maggie. She was so cute, but she never became house trained and I spent a lot of time trying to decide what to do with her and feeling guilty. Finally she got hit by a car and we had to put her to sleep. The kids cried and I felt bad, but at the same time I was relieved that it was all over. I like other peoples dogs, but from now on it's cats for me. BTW-have you considered taking Judah to a training school? I have a friend who does that and his dog is the best dog ever. I know it costs more money, but it's just a thought.

{{{HUGS}}} It sounds like you need a few today. I hope things got better for you. I also hope you're able to work things out where Judah is concerned. I really like the Ludy's book and she has one she's written by herself that's good, too. I've raised my daughters along the same principles and sometimes they feel like there may never be a guy in their future either. But you know, you don't need a lot of guys...just that one guy. It'll happen when it's time. Maybe God's purpose for you is spinsterhood, but I doubt it. I'll be praying that you will be able to fully accept His love and His help in learning to love yourself. You sound like a girl who's got a lot to offer, don't sell yourself short. Sorry, I didn't mean to write a novel!

Maybe The Killers are "old people's music" after all! I've gotta buy their CD. I read your profile and I was amazed at how much we have in common. I've got to become more "age appropriate" one of these days. I love your posts and your puppy. She's adorable and I like her name. I wanted to name my last baby Judah if she would have been a boy, but the older daughters could only think of "Hey, Jude" and rebelled at the notion. Your poor head. Between the trauma to your eyes at Sears and the trauma to your ears at church...ouch! Talking down to Christian teens like they are all unstable, floundering idiots is one of my greatest pet peeves. When I meet strong-minded, capable, and together ones, such as yourself, it makes me smug because I am right!

And one more thing... while I also don't push the idea of the Illuminati being in control, it would surprise me about as much as someone telling me that a dog just licked himself to find out that it is in control. The only real argument I can find against it is the fact that world leaders right now are so divided on the Iraq position that I'd think if there was one group in charge, there would be less dissention among the nations. For instance, Chiraq wouldn't be in power, someone that also wanted to go to war against Iraq would be. However, there is so much dirty going on in elections right now, that it has to be a very organized group that's making it happen and a group that doesn't fear retalliation if caught. You just don't fix elections if it means you're going to go to prison. You only fix elextions if you know that you can get out of trouble if caught. I see arguments for both and wouldn't argue either way as to whether or not the Illuminati exists. It's funny, because I was just talking to my mom about this last week. Oh, and one more, one more thing. I agree with your mom that he's a very powerful man. And I think the fact that he's so shrouded in mystery just affirms that. If you knew too much about him, he wouldn't be able to be manipulative anymore. Sorry this was so long.

By the way, I do think that Bush has this man to thank for his re-election. I seriously doubt if we'll ever know the extent to which this "guy behind the guy" helped to further Bush's political reach into America. In my opinion, thank God for this guy.

Some people think Karl Rove is an evil genius. I think he's just a political genius. I think it's true that the President doesn't have the best ideas in mind for every aspect of our country. I also think it's true that he's surrounded himself with the people that do. Political advisors are as important as the President himself. They advise, he decides. Two heads are /always/ better than one. I think Karl is good at what he does and that scares liberals. Probably rightly so because he furthers the conservative agenda rather than the liberal agenda. However, I think that's lead to a lot of lies and outrageous mythology about the man. He's good at what he does -- political marketing. An interesting, short bio of the man can be found here (although I'm not sure I believe all of that either -- I'd really like to read an autobiography of this man's memoirs in 20 or so years when he's out of the political life): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Rove

Hahaha... Yeah, I know. :) But I bet if I knew you personally, I would find out a lot of strange things about you - and trust me, you'd find out a heck of a lot about me!! Which is why I don't see how people can believe presidential candidates are supposed to be perfect... A few goof-ups are understandable, but what gets me is Kerry's constant running with everything the Democratic party throws out there - like first that "memo" about Bush's incompetence, now this thing about how the Iraqis stole all these weapons from us - the thing they forgot to point out was this wasn't like last week or anything. THIS WAS MONTHS BEFORE THE WAR STARTED!! Now this is part of Kerry's campaign. Great, huh?

Yeah, I don't think I'd be able to handle being in the military ever - but, say I was drafted, even tho women don't get drafted (by the way, if you've heard of the draft reinstatement, that bill was slammed 402-2), I would proudly go because I love my country. I don't think I would join by choice because I'm not sure if I could take it - which is exactly why I'm so proud of those who could. Especially my mum. No one will believe her that she was in the marines - let alone a sergeant! My friends won't even believe me when I tell them! So I guess my mum was a tough lady... and I'm sure proud of her!

I totally agree with you!!! It's sooo refreshing to find people who realize the truth about all this!! Of course Bush isn't perfect - but get real!! Neither are the people bashing him for making mistakes! (imo, tho, the Iraq War was NOT a mistake) I respect anyone for what they believe and won't hate them just because they have a different opinion. Why can't more people be like that?! I read a really sad poem once that really made me cry. I don't remember the whole thing, but it started, "It was the flag, not the reporter, that gave the people freedom of the press" and went on through each of our freedoms like that. At the end, it said, "It was the soldier who fought and died under the flag who gave the people the right to burn it." It's so sad but very true. By protesting the war in the fashion that these people are, putting down Bush and not even knowing what the war is about, it is just like yelling in the faces of the parents who have lost their children in this war, "Your child died for nothing! His/her death was in vain! We don't care about his/her sacrifice!" It's really sad.

Had a physique like a swimmer? Hah, hah. I was telling my sister today how I'm going to marry a man in uniform, who is also in a band. Anyway. About the willow tree. It was huge, in our backyard, and I loved it. I think the whole factor of it coming down being so upsetting to me was because we were already planning to move, and that sort of sent me into reality. We used to jump in the huge piles of leaves by it, and I just loved it. Then we had to take it down, and move, and I was just very, very upset. I think I'm still semi-bitter about the move. Sigh.

How many days have the seeds been in the soil? Some seeds take forever to pop up. Shasta daisies in particular (is that the kind you got?) take forever to do everything because they're perennials. I planted mine three months ago and they're only two inches high. If you want to be sure the seeds you're planting aren't dead right from the start, you can put them on top of a damp paper towel and then fold it over, so that they're covered. Keep it damp (not wet) and when they start to germinate, plant them. /unsolicited advice

I like cooking. I'm so domestic. All I really want to do is stay home, make flowers grow, and bake cookies. All that liberation, for naught!

are you yourself in your dreams? i mean, your body and personality and everything? i am almost never my actual self. i've been a black woman, a chick with an illegitimate kid and college loans to pay, an adopted native american man, and scores of other individuals totally different from myself. as previously advertised, my subconscious is definitely out of this world.

it sucks that you are probably working right now, otherwise i would try to call. right now i am trying to jokingly convince a friend to take me to his prom. the joke is on me, though, because if i convinced him, i'd totally go. too bad the chances of him going are the same as me winning the lottery tonight. you know, especially considering i didn't play.

I hate crappy jobs. I'm glad you quit. 5.15 is totally ridiculous regardless of how they treat you, anyway.

I'm taking classes at the community college to finish up my senior year. I did it last year, too. Also, I *am* black. Where have you been? We really haven't talked in forever + a day. You need to come visit.

There's a letter for you on my bookshelf that you might wanna come get. You certainly don't want to wait for me to put a stamp on it.

Employment sucks. Food sucks, especially. I used to drive home crying every other night because my legs hurt so bad. Shall I flip through my file of horror stories to encourage you? There was the time I got called into work at noon and didn't go home until 2:30AM... or the countless 11-hour shifts without breaks (child labor laws? what?)... or that one night where everyone else bailed and I ran all of the stations by myself for the last hour and then closed, which is a nightmare unto itself. This, you see, is why I am now a bum.

well you didn't tell me you got a diary. so pfft on you. also, since when do you actually like guys who look like matt damon and heath ledger? aren't they a little, uh, young for you? i mean, come on, neither of them have any grey hair.

Mm... pathetic ones. The best kind. (Yes, I am sleep deprived. Thank you for asking.)
