Life and Death in 12 Point Palatino

I'm a redheaded, right-handed, right-brained writer and musician who presently lives on the picturesque North Shore of Long Island, NY. My roommates are my "significant other" Eric, a former high school biology teacher who's currently working as landscape director and educator at a local museum, and my Blue Fronted Amazon parrot Hamlet, aka Green. I moved here in 2000 from Los Angeles where I'd lived for most of my life. I have eight published books and one music CD, and am always working on more.

CD: Reinventing the Wheel (Dinghy Records; available through Amazon.com and CD Baby)

BOOKS: Being Frank: My Time with Frank Zappa (California Classics Books, 2003)

Alfred Jarry: The Man with the Axe (illustrated by Bill Griffith) (Last Gasp)

The Sagebrush Bohemian: Mark Twain in California (Paragon House; out of print)

Bread & Hyacinths: The Rise and Fall of Utopian Los Angeles (with Lionel Rolfe and Paul Greenstein) (California Classics)

In-print titles can be purchased at fine bookstores everywhere, or ordered through your favorite online vendor

My favorite diaries:

My favorite music:

Steely Dan
comments:  Existential Philosophy 101 with a killer backbeat and cool sax riffing
Frank Zappa
comments:  He used to cut the grass...he was a very nice boy
John Tabacco
comments:  He's from Jupiter Moon...if you don't believe me check him out on Beta Records' website: http://www.betarecords.com (enter John Tabacco under Artist)
Laura Nyro
comments:  A true craftswoman and a magical performer
Pat Metheny
comments:  Unlike the other four, he's neither Italian nor Jewish, but his playing and composition never cease to amaze me

My favorite movies:

My favorite authors:

Mark Twain
comments:  Required reading, post-Enron, post-FCC deregulation, post-"war" hysteria...skip "Tom Sawyer" and go straight to "Letters From the Earth," his post-1906 essays, or his unedited Autobiography
Donald Culross Peattie
comments:  Never heard of him? Get hold of his two fascinating books about trees, "A Natural History of Western Trees" and "A Natural History of Trees of Eastern and Central North America"
Alfred Jarry
comments:  Proto-Dadaist French playwright/author...some say he invented punk in the 1890s with his play "Ubu Roi" (King Ubu)
Walt Whitman
comments:  The great American poet
David Walley
comments:  Sadly, David passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on Aug. 5, 2006. He was a dear friend and I miss him terribly. He wrote a number of great books. His website is at http://www.walleyswitzend.com.
