My favorite music:

King Sunny Ade
comments:  And other afrobeat/juju/highlife, like Fela Kuti and Thomas Mapfumo. When I dance alone in my house, this is what I dance to.
Philip Glass
comments:  Sentimental attachment; drives most other people insane, but something about Glass suggests an orderly universe, which I sometimes find comforting
Johnny Cash
comments:  My personal hero. A protest musician, a guilty conscience, an empathizer with pretty much everyone: picks up where Whitman and John Ford left off. You've got to love Christians who cover Nick Cave.
The Who
comments:  Another sentimental attachment. Suggests a disorderly universe, which I also find comforting sometimes.
Bob Dylan
comments:  I like him most when he's in his selfish moods. And when I'm in mine.

My favorite movies:

Singin' In the Rain
comments:  A hallucination about a movie within a movie. Take for cheerfulness as needed.
Rules of the Game
comments:  "Everyone has their reasons."
The Royal Tenenbaums
comments:  I never get tired of it, either.
The West Wing
comments:  And Alias. They both use their medium well.
Casablanca
comments:  Because deep down I'm a sap. Also in this category: Notting Hill, Four Weddings and a Funeral.

My favorite authors:

Thomas Pynchon
comments:  Contains multitudes. "You will not touch the master, but you may tickle his creatures."
Neal Stephenson
comments:  Baroque indeed. Porno for historiographers.
Alexander Pope
comments:  My favorite critic.
John Ashbery
comments:  A kind of generalized autobiography. Comfort poetry, to me, sort of like eating quiche.
Karl Popper
comments:  It takes a pretty singular intelligence to debunk as much of western philosophy as this guy did. Fascinating life, as well.
