Chapter 89

Davis's mind wandered to Bethany. He wondered how she was doing, whether she was worried over him, and whether she was ok. He only wished that he had more time to live so that he could show Bethany how very much he loved her. It was as if Stella read his mind, for her hand snaked out of the darkness and came to rest lightly over his heart. "You need not worry," she said to him. "You are cured. No doctor will be able to find a trace of the cancer in your body."

Davis supposed that he should feel surprised, but he found that he was not. He had half hoped that Stella would be able to cure him, even though he had not allowed himself to dwell upon that hope. He hated disappointment more than anything else and had learned, long ago, how to hide it well.

"Thank you," he said sincerely, reaching up and squeezing her hand. "You have given me a gift that I will never be able to pay you back for."

"That's alright," she replied, "just help me save the world and everything will have been paid back to me."

"You drive a tough bargain, lady," he said, "but I accept the challenge."
