They've stolen our country... again

Nov. 3rd, 2004 - I am sitting here in my little home in Philadelphia, PA.... watching the TV and listening to talk radio, as I have been breathlessly all night watching the election results.... and slowly but surely, the knot that has been in my stomach for weeks is tightening and I am beginning to face the reality that the worst case scenario has come to pass.

They've stolen our country.

Again.

Bastards.

Dirty... rotten... stinking bastards.

It appears that once again fear has triumphed over hope, selfish cynicism has triumped over compassion, ignorance has triumphed over enlightenment, arrogance has trimphed over humility, divisiveness has triumphed over unity.

Damn.

Damn, Damn, Damn.

This one really hurts.

I fear the America I grew up in and grew to love will never be the same again. Not in my lifetime, at least. The social safety net.... our Constitutionally protected (for now) civil rights, the MIDDLE CLASS for that matter.... are all under attack as strongly as any time in the nation's history since the horrors of the sweatshop days of the Industrial Revolution.

And I'm as mad as hell about it.

The question is... what now?

Do we sit back and lick our wounds?

SCREW.... THAT.

Now is the time to fight. All people of conscience who love America..... OUR America.... the one the elitist Neo-cons stole where we believe we are our brothers keeper and not mindless sheep who's purpose in life is to fatten the profit margin of the Halliburtons of the world.... are needed more than ever. We need to take the fight to them. And we've already started. This election is not the end of our great struggle, but the beginning of a long term struggle to take America back from the bastards who stole it.

We need to develop an ideological infrastructure of our own. We need smart, articulate, dynamic people out there to tell OUR side of the story. And that has already started. Air America Radio ( http://www.airamericaradio.com/ ) has come on the air seven months ago to give us pissed off liberals a place to hear OUR issues, OUR agenda, OUR vision of America talked about. Thank you, guys. God Bless you. Keep it coming.

Liberals are learning to find other ways to communicate with one another and organize, and raise funds like Howard Dean did so effectively this year via the powerful NEW information media... the internet (thank you, Al Gore) . We need organizers who are both savvy in new technologies and in people skills who can unite all our splintered little interest groups and create a huge machine for selling the American way of life that we want and need and really deserve. Benjamin Franklin said at the end of the Constitutional Convention, "You have a Republic, if you can keep it."

It's time to show how bad you want it.

I was reading a brilliant, brilliant post on one of these blogs from a gentleman I have infinite respect for who calls himself "buggieboy" entitled "Lessons learned from this election ". I urge every person who loves America to read this post ( http://buggieboy.blogspot.com/2004/11/lessons-learned-from-this-election.html ) .

He is so right in so much of what he said. We need to start fighting fire with fire. We need to say "I... AM... A... LIBERAL" with PRIDE and wrap OURSELVES in the Flag as well. It's OUR country, too.

We need to take back our issues.... and put THEM on the defense. "Family values" is NOT making Granny decide to pay for food or her medicine while the filthy rich are getting tax cuts and the drug companies are making record profits. I could go on and on... but I don't want to bore the hell out of you.

The bottom line is, we can't just take this lying down. We can't get discouraged and just quit. That's just what the extreme right-wing fascists want us to do. We came justthisclose to pulling this one out. If we continue to fight the good fight, we will win. God willing, I'll be talking in the weeks and months (and hopefully years) to come about this great nation we love.... and ways to fight to get it back.

"You have a republic if you can keep it."

Time to get to work.
