I've been doing my best to get beyond feeling depressed and out of it. Life may suck, but I am determined to be happy, damn it!!

We are currently entertaining two of Linda's foster bunnies, two very cute but painfully shy sisters, who came up here to meet possible adopters. It didn't work out - the adopters, a somewhat doughy young man and his sharp-faced, country girl wife, came on Sunday.

They were willfully clueless. Anyone who tries to pick up a bunny five minutes after they have been told that the bunnies are shy and don't like to be picked up really, really needs a course in remedial listening. Of course, they were very nice, too, so I couldn't be nasty, so instead I tried the tactic of "Do you know how expensive they are? And you have to drive to Birmingham every time they need a vet? And they eat their own poop! Did you know that rabbits eat their own poop?!"

That last one gets them every time. And it's true - rabbits do have to reingest their poop for nutritional reasons. I won't bore you with the details! People who have true potential as rabbit lovers don't mind this, but anyone who is on the fence is completely put off. It separates the wheat from the chaff.

So the adopters decided that maybe a rat or a ferret or a sugar glider was a better bet, and I breathed a sigh of relief. I think the sisters did, too. So now we are trying to keep them entertained until they go back to Linda's next week.

It's difficult, because they are so, so shy. I don't think they are thrilled about me, even when I show up with banana, but they seem to like Bruce. They like him so much that I have periodically insisting that he go in and chat with them.

He sits next to their pen and talks to them about the state of their butts and how cute their butts are and about bunny butts in general, and they look at him like he is some sort of fascinating god and then start eating their veggies like hogs.

In contrast, when I go in, they look stricken and cower at the back of their cardboard box shelte refusing to eat. I'm left wondering if they are getting intestinal problems or they have been traumatised by the colour of my shirt.

Bruce just has a way with girls, it seems!
