| Thanks for your note. I accept that saying 'all those below the average salary seem to manage OK' is not really accurate - however it was there to make a point. There are a lot of people who do earn less than the Firefighters, and who can't have second jobs, but seem to be able to make ends meet - so the claim that the Firefighters can't is unsupportable. Being on or just below the National Average doesn't make you poor, and if the Firefighters really couldn't manage then that would mean the National Average was below the poverty line and I'd expect to see widespread poverty in the UK - which there isn't. I didn't mention anything about Nurses, but judging by the pay scales (http://society.guardian.co.uk/NHSstaff/table/0,8082,688815,00.html) it does seem that they do not get paid enough. The other comparison between Firefighters and Nurses is that where there are 40 applications for each Firefighter post, there are not enough applications for Nurses to fill their posts. Seems to me like Firefighters have it made while Nurses get all the crap. One possible reason for this is that Firefighters are mainly saving posessions and buildings (yes, they save lives too, but those people still need Nurses to help them pull through), whereas Nurses are only saving lives. All the fat cats with Private Health schemes are keen to promote the Fire Service because their investments (insurance) are safer that way, but of course they'll never go near an NHS hospital so don't care about Nurses. If you want to suggest a topic specifically about the Nurses in the UK, go right ahead. |

I can only think how blessed I would be if I could find it later, remaindered at $9.99.
