his unholy vestments

and in the plains of this barbarous lands
where the jagged remnants of love remain strewn among the sand
his ribs jutting like the beached shipwreck of some ancient vessel
it was there where he was killed
drawn and quartered by the very beasts he drove from the prairie
and they called him cupid or eros
and his blood stains the ground in pools that even as i speak they lay among the ground thick and wet
the face of the earth refusing to drink even a drop of that dark fluid
yet we stand hand in hand
with the beasts and pigs that now toil in droves
snapping at each other and gnashing their teeth like carrion kings
we watch idly as tornadoes and brittle dust devils carve their paths across the land and send any living thing screaming into the abyss
we laugh as the sun closes its eye and forever condemns us to an eternity without its embrace like a warm blanket on our bloated stomachs
and we will hold open our mouths to the sky like pale crocodiles waiting for rain
while the gods weep into their own hands and wash their faces with that salty nectar and refuse to let even a morsel spill upon that foul globe
