The World and Us

Sitting in the laundromat watching the clothes tumble over and over in the coin operated dryers, listening to the TV tell me the news of the day, I am sad. Why does the world have to be so full of hurt, pain and misery? The TV tells me about the horrors of countries that are plagued with death and despair. Then there is a commercial for the latest, new and improved toilet paper. Who cares?? There are men, women and children who were murdered, raped and abused today, yesterday and it will happen again tomorrow. This doesn't only happen in Darfur and Afghanistan, but also in St. Louis, Gainesville and New Orleans. Does it really matter who Jennifer Aniston is dating? Does it matter which "celebrity" is going to be on Dancing with the Stars this season?

As I got out of my car carrying my laundry and lamenting the fact that I don't have a washer and dryer in my apartment, I realized that my life is good. I then thought to myself, why should my life be good and others lives be so harrowing. I need to make a change...in my life and in others.

You might say that one person can't make a change in the world...not true. Once person can bring the awareness to others, one person can gather those people together and help institute change in the world. We don't have to be "celebrities" to do this. We just have to be committed to the greater good. Where would we be without each other? I see notes that my friends have written about how much they love their friends and don't know what they would do without them...I agree. We all need to be friends and love everyone in the world. Where would we be without love? Again...where would we be without each other?

What is the first step to change? I believe it is love and a passion to make a difference in the lives of others. Together we can do this.

I took my dogs for a walk this evening and glanced up at the sky...it's almost a full moon. I wondered for a moment if the women in those war torn countries, women and children in abusive households, women who are selling their bodies because they think they have no way out...I wondered if they could see the same sky, I wondered if they knew that someone was thinking of them in little Gainesville, Florida, hoping that their day tomorrow wouldn't be as violent as it was today.

Tomorrow is a new day and it will be a day of change...will you join me?
