ghostparty's Diaryland Diary

Things I never want to forget

I went for a walk with Nick after dinner and we passed by my grandfather's old house. It was the one he used to live in before he died. It was weird because I always avoided walking by his house. It seems so strange to me that there is another family living there now. I looked at the backyard while we were passing by and I noticed that the plum tree that used to grow on the side of the yard was gone. The new owners replaced it with two small trees. For some reason, I felt like crying but I didn't want to make Nick feel uncomfortable.

I remember helping my grandfather pick plumbs off that tree. I was so small that I could only reach the lower branches which barely held any.

When I was little, going to grandpa and grandma's house was a big deal. I loved spending time with them. I remember watching the original Hairspray movie there. It was when my grandmother was still alive. She used to give me cookies and make sure I was happy every second I was there. For some reason I used to love playing with her refrigerator magnets. My grandparents used to make crafts together and they had really neat homemade magnets that my brother and I used to like to play with.

My grandmother used to make dolls too. Every once in a while when I would go over she would give me a doll. As a child, my mother always bought me the latest Barbies and toys. I had the whole set of Sailor Moon dolls, but I always favored and treasured everything my grandma made for me.

I can go on and on writing about how special my grandparents were and still are to me. I am so lucky to have had them in my life. I'll never forget my grandpa's sense of humor or the way he always wore blue or anything flannel and I'll never forget my grandma's sweet voice or the way she would say, "Oh, Jim." after my grandpa would tell a joke.

When things get really bad in my life there are times when I wish they still lived around the corner. I know I'd probably be there right now talking to them about how crazy my mother's side of the family is and my grandma would probably give me cookies and I would probably move some of their refrigerator magnets around just because. Then of course grandpa would tell a joke and he would smile at me and we would all be okay.
