A late rant on airline travelling
2005-01-25 ~ 8:54 p.m.

Yeah, so the vow to update more often didn't really stick. Sorry.

The holidays were fine...nothing to report there. Except for the flights. All I have to say is, Canjet, you've made "The List".

If you knew me at all, you'd know that if I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck whatsoever. Having said that, it didn't surprise me one bit to learn that there was a storm on the day I was to fly out to Newfoundland for the holidays. No biggie. D. and I went to the airport a bit late and proceeded to the bar where we played cards and drank pitcher after pitcher of beer. Interspersed amoung the cries of "you can't make that move in Crazy 8's!!!" were announcements by the airport that our flight was being delayed. And delayed. Aaaaand delayed. Again. Some more.

We were supposed to leave Ottawa at 630 PM originally. We managed to get out at around 1030.

Not too bad, you say? Wait. It gets better.

So we have to fly into Halifax and change planes, because apparently the rest of Canada doesn't recognize that Newfoundland became a fucking province back in the '40's and is actually a part of the country now, and there is not one city on the "mainland" that has a non-stop flight to St. John's.

Anyway.

As I was saying, we fly into Halifax at around 12 or so their time. Then we find out we have to wait until 230 AM to get our next flight, because fucking Pearson airport in Toronto is all but shut down and the flights coming in from Toronto and continuing on to St. John's were very late getting in. Hey, in their defense, they got almost 7 cms of snow. Why wouldn't they shut down?? They've called in the Army for less.

Ok, I keep getting off track here. Sorry.

So we sit and wait and twiddle our thumbs (we were all Crazy-8'ed out by then and coming down off of the beer buzz). Then we're allowed to get on the plane. I'm all happy and shit since we're finally getting on the go.

Then we sit. And sit. Aaaaaand sit. Still sitting. More sitting. For an hour they let us stew on that bloody plane - and I mean stew, because they had the heat cranked way up past "sauna" up to the "hell" setting, and didn't have the air blower thingys switched on. By this time, I'm tired, sort of hung over, cranky, and was feeling a serious bitch fit coming on.

Finally they got on the horn and explained that the plane was just going through an inspection that needs to be done every X amount of kms in the air.

I think I spoke for everyone on the plane when I piped up, "Then why did you allow us to board the goddamn plane in the first place if you knew we were just going to sit here??"

We got into Newfoundland around 530 AM. We got to my grandmother's place and crashed for about 2 hours before the rest of the house woke up. It took us about 3 days to recover.

Luckily for Canjet, the flight home was relatively uneventful. Otherwise I don't think I would have been responsible for my actions.

So, yeah, the holidays went well. Lots of presents - D. gave me an iPod -now I must accessorize...damn you, iPod makers!!!
