I used to like reading your journal. Now the server won't let me, and I am stupid and can't not figure out why. Oh well, you're still cool.
from sunnflower :
Hi from Suburban Island. I used all my Russian on you in less than 5 words and you didn't snicker. Thanks. I think you all did a great job with JournalCon. It was a complicated location to coordinate. The hotel was beautiful but funky and cool so maybe they thought the champagne cancelled out the lack of connectivity. I enjoyed meeting you and thanks again for all your hard work!
from mbwillow :
I missed you! Welcome back!

OK- so my boss KINDA MENTIONED that she MAY send me with her to D.C. in July...we'll see. She does this alot- saying I'm going somewhere and then something comes up and I end up having to stay, but I'm hopeful I can go- God knows, I need to get the hell outta here. Poka! Mbwillow

Enjoy the trip! And... happy Orthodox Christmas...

Oh, but the monkey sequence of "stick finger in butt, then in nose, then fall off backwards from tree" had me cracking up. I missed the TCM bit, I wish we HAD seen it, becuase Dave would have died. I also like the Halloween "inanimate object comes to life" clips, especially the one where the pumpkin eats the little kid. That will be our house, I'm sure of it. Terrorizing the young un's even if it's a school night.

I emailed you at [email protected] but I want to make sure you read this. I'm mbwillow It's me. Your pal from St. Petersburg. You know, the one who misses you and lost touch. I can't believe we know the same person. Small world.

Sorry to hear it...in government, it's all about learning to play the stupid game, isn't it? Have much beer tonight, and kick their sorry asses next time around.

Okay, so when I was in sixthgrade, we went to Alaska for April vacation, after getting bumped flying home from Colorado on our February vacation . . . but, as youknow, Alaska is pretty unhappening in April, especiallyif you're 11 ("Oh great. Another friggin goat.") so my parents baited us the WHOLE week with dreams of Alaskaland! My sister (8) and I must have looked through the brochures a hundred times, all the dancing! the fun! the rides! andit said, EVERYWHERE, "Open Year Round!" (youknow where I'm going withthis, eh?) Sure, it's OPEN. You can PARK and walkAROUND and look at boarded up jade stores . . . it was a total Nat'l Lampoon moment in the Lastname family . . . my dad took pictures of us pretending to cry in the abandoned (but still OPEN!) Alaskaland! At least theyraised us with a sense of humor. THe university museum withit's big bear was cool, though, and then we ended up meeting a piolt friend of a friend, who flew us around Denali and we buzzed a big grizzly that reared up on its hind legs and swatted at us. We were told to never tell anyone about that, but I do all the time. NICE 'NOTE' HUH? :) And yes, separate checking accounts will be kept, but also a joint moneymarket/checking.

I woke up this morning and thought...Dagestan. Dagestan. Well, Moshe Gammer's bio of Shamyl was a bit much, so I just rummaged around and found LeCarre's "Our Game" and my old copy of "Allah's Mountains".
from raven72d :
Thank for the recommendations... I've been looking at Vadim Volkov's "Violent Entrepreneurs" and another piece of Russian reportage called "The Wild East". Fun, but not quite academic enough. I really do want to look up "Black Earth City"... Any news on the TDY? (Right now, btw, you should be calling Novorossisk on the jerkboy's lost telephone... At least get the cost of postage out of him.)
from raven72d :
Suggest, if you would, some books on the economy of post-1991 Russia. I have a decent background in Soviet econ history, but the economy post-Gorbachev is something I need to read about. I read too much Pavel Felgenhauer; I need something more substantial.

I am also a "russia-girl": a girl, but not a Russian one! :) After I get my associates, I plan to major in International Relations and Russian...your diary may be educational! :) I'll be back with more comments to be sure. P.S.I like Zemfira too. He is more rocky, but do you like the dance at all? Have you ever heard Tatyana Bulanova, Virus, Ruki Vverkh, Strelki, Alsu?
from raven72d :
Congrats on the article! I seem to recall that the Sakha were the subjects of a novel, once... Tapsell's "Year of the Horsetails"...

Hey, did you make up that alphabet survey? If so, may I steal it? (With due credit, of course.)

Hi! I've just dropped by your site and I wanted to tell you, that I like it! It awakens memories... I've grown up in Russia and always wished our school would get an exchange student like those on tv, but the again I was wondering who would ever want to spend a year in Russia. Well, in the end I've ended up being an exchange student myself. Or actualy an immigrant. But to Germany, therefore my crappy English. Whatever. I'm from St. Petersburg by the way. Oh, and you need a link to your profile from your diary.
from mulletbaby :
I have moved to a new rant-space: www.livejournal.com/users/msmidge Now that I'm done giving all my money to graduate schools for the privilege of having them not admit me, I have lots of free time to compose rants.
from robin-smith :
Hello, fellow drone! Kickin' it to ya Old School, public servant style! Thanks for the link. Hey, my grandparents were from Russia. They were German Mennonites, though, not Russians as such. But my Grandma made kick-ass borscht.
