passions
2004-05-30 - 9:52 p.m.

When my sister and I lived under the same roof, I used to check the mail before her to pull out her Rolling Stone magazine and read it before she even knew it had arrived. It was her subscription, but I read it cover to cover prior to revealing it to her. That was my escape. It was my own little pop culture education. I had something to get excited about.

This will be one of the first themes discussed in Abstract Portico: passions. What are they? How do we find them? How do we stay connected to them through trying times? How do we share them, if at all? To what extent can a passion motivate someone to overcome an illness, even if only temporarily? Tell me about the passion that can transcend your mood, your disorder, your condition.

One of the reaons I'm starting this ezine is that I found a statistic that scares me: there's a 90% suicide rate for people with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. So if you're one of the "lucky" folks with all three, this site is started with you in mind.

I hope this statistic is wrong. If someone could find me a more accurate stat, I'd be thrilled. But quite frankly, I'm scared as hell for people who have all three of these conditions. I want to give them, and others with mental health issues, a place to express themselves. This site is not a substitute for visiting a doctor. If you are in crisis, please visit your nearest emergency room or call a helpline.
