Don't Be A Dick

"Right now I'm having amnesia and
deja-vu at the same time. I think
I've forgotten this before."

So,

Once upon a time there was a girl. Let's call her Beth, because her name is really Heather. She was recently divorced from some guy named Dick, not Ted.

Now, Beth was out in California visiting her brother and his wife, and allowing Dick some visitation rights, even though as part of the divorce agreement, he was supposed to be taking parenting classes and wasn't.

Beth went over to pick up their two young girls one night and was surprised to find that the oldest, a three year old, had wet her pants enough to overflow the pull-up because nobody had asked her if she needed to go to the potty. The youngest daughter, only eleven months old, had a soggy diaper as well.

Beth was livid, but what could she do?

She wanted to take the girls to the fair for a couple hours and asked Dick if he would mind dropping them off on his way home Sunday evening. He said no, that things were going to be busy and that wouldn't work. In his overwhelming generosity, he offered to give up some of his time on Thursday in return for some time the following Tuesday.

Beth refused, because the following Tuesday, her brother was going to drive her up to the LA airport.

But he pushed it, saying that he didn't mind taking her to the airport and all. Beth again refused, probably because she didn't want to spend any more time with him than necessary.

So Dick acted like a complete dick and said that there was no way he could drop the girls off at the fair Sunday night.

So Beth seethed all night. And in the morning, she called him back and told him she needed him to drop them off...that it made sense, it was on his way home, and that was that. Strangely, he didn't put up much of a fight.

When Beth went to drop off the girls that morning, the door was open and she overheard Dick talking to his mom.

"This will work out GREAT. Now I can have time to swing by the Shop on the way home and repair a few instruments!"

Uh-huh.

And then later he broke the news to Beth. He was going to have to work the Shop on Thursday. And here he was acting like he was trying to be NICE by giving her Thursday in exchange for Tuesday. What a freaking CROCK OF SHIT.

The Shop is a crummy job anyway, and they screw him every year. Yet for some reason, he has this bizarre loyalty to them. If he were HALF as devoted to his family as he is to that job, he might still be married and not having to worry about this shit.

But the saga of Dick is neverending. Beth called her brother this afternoon.

"I thought you'd like to hear this story," she told him. "Dick was supposed to come by your apartment and pick up the girls sometime between 8 and 8:30 this morning. Want to guess what time he showed up?"

"Well, knowing Dick, and knowing that he is NEVER on time, I'd say close to 10."

"TEN FORTY-FIVE!"

"And he was supposed to be there by 8:30?!"

"Yup. And it gets better...I called him a little while later and told him that I had forgotten to pack the girls' hats and didn't want them to get sunburned. He said he would swing by in fifteen minutes or so to pick them up. He had to put the carseats in the car. I told him that was fine, and took a quick shower. I went outside and he still wasn't there, so I took the trash out to the dumpster. I called his parents' house, but nobody was home, so I figured they were on their way. Finally, after I had been standing outside for over a half-hour, I called his cellphone. He said 'Oh. I forgot.' No apology, no explanation. Just 'I forgot.' He was at McDonald's."

"What a Dick."

"Yup."

There you have it my friends. And you wonder why she divorced him... (actually, in the grand scheme of things he's done, this is actually pretty mild...)

Boy, I'm glad my sister doesn't have to put up with this kind of shit from her ex. She has enough to remember from her marriage without new shit piling up.

*cough*

Moral of the story my friends: Don't be a Dick.
