Long Time No See

It's been a while since I was on here, and I've been feeling a little nostalgic for good old d-land.

So...how are things, empty ether of friends list?

Christmas

I know I've not been terribly active on d-land of late.

(-(Check out my new digs on LJ)-)

In any case, I wish everyone on d-land a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Bleak House

Stupid cold. I've set Tuesday as the absolute limit to when I go see The Hobbit again, and I've been working really hard so that can happen. Only now my nose is dripping and I'm constantly tired and I'm popping Beechams Max Strength (for far worse colds than mine, I really ought to stop) like there's no tomorrow.

I've decided that I'd like to go and live in Bleak House with Mr Jarndyce - everyone's so nice there. I'd have no work to do because I'd be a woman of some means. If I did get a cold, there'd be someone nice to mop my brow while a man, a nice man in a frock coat would pace around outside in a manly yet caring way. I'd get to wear a beautiful dress which takes half an hour to get into. If anything did go wrong, people would retreat into the drawing room and use words like "ought" and "goodness me".

Did I mention that everyone would be incredibly polite and nice?

Maybe it's the Beechams talking.

Escapism is fun.

PS- I've never read the book, so please don't spoil it for me!

Harvey!

Huggy. Fucking. Bear.

I went to see Harvey at the Royal Exchange last night. For free! Hurrah! Hayley's mum is the editor on a small paper so she gets free tickets to things like this so Hayley and I spent last night having a very cheap evening of culture. Well, I was late thanks to having to trudge through ice in cheap boots, and then there was a man who repeatedly retired to the toilet in my train carriage, phone in hand, to do things that I don't want to think about too hard. So not so much with the culture from the start.

The play was pretty good. It wasn't quite Harvey with James Stewart - but it is my favourite movie so there's a lot for it to live up to. Sometimes the delivery was a little slow, which I appreciate is kind of a necessity for delivering dialogue on stage, but what I enjoy so much about Mary Chase's writing is that the dialogue is quick and snappy and dry. The humour just doesn't lend itself to a "punchline" style of delivery. The first half of the play felt a little bogged down by this, though I think partly because I was getting used to the delivery and the style. The second half was much better - I think everyone seemed to have settled in, the pace picked up and litle, and more importantly, there was much more Ben Keaton. It takes a lot to be as good an Elwood P Dowd as James Stewart, but I think he did it. It helped that he brought something new - there was more tenderness, not to mention drunkeness to his performance. I adored him by the end.

And - hurrah! I was hoping to see at least one minor celebirty there, being press night at all. There didn't look to be anybody, until Hayley nudged me and pointed to the corner of the room. We then spent the next minutes trying to work out who he was while edging subtly across the room in his general direction. We weren't the only ones either. There was much Huggy Bear muttering once everyone had figured it out. Squee! I saw Huggy Bear. And he was talking about the time he met James Stewart. And he was carrying a Boots carrier bag. There was also another guy who looked familliar, wearing very Christopher-Eccleston-in-Dr-Who garb (also very cute), but I couldn't place him. He looked a little like one of the characters from 'Ultraviolet' but not quite.

And I have to go and watch Neighbours. The stuff about the Catholic church and its homophobic-git-facestness is making me grind my teeth. Stupid pope.

Excellent. Now to find Samwise. And possibly Frodo. Yeah. The innocent part? Not so much in my head.

Bad, bad Leroy Brown.

I'm full of curry and sandwiches. I think I may have funny dreams tonight. Also, I cannot get 'Bad, Bad Leroy Brown' out of my head despite the fact I only half the chorus.

I just thought I'd share that with you.

Now I'm off to watch 'Bleak House'.

Bad, bad Leroy Brown..

What's on TV

I've been so terrible at updating, sorry.

And..there's not much to update about. Work has been tootling along OK, although I sometimes make little mistakes which makes me worry whether the people I work think I'm useless. Oh, well. I'll think of money.

Ran into Alex on campus - he mocked me about not seeing my dissertation supervisor all term. Which he has every right to. He relented when I winced and pointed out that I was in a situation where the longer I leave it, the more I feel I have to show him, which means the longer I leave it: then he said lots of nice things to make me feel better. The laughed at me some more. Bah! We also talked about a mutual lecturer we had in Brum being on the telly recently. The consensus seemed to be that he was a little smug and glory seeking. I'm just proud that an old lecturer of mine was featured in What's On TV.

So, yes. I have been trying to work - going to the library after work work...and nearly nodding off in front of my book in case of this afternoon. All this is me trying to get something suitable together to take to the Hobbit. Fingers crossed I get it done soon.
