The Clash, yes... Daniel and the other two kids who were in COL at the time were HEAVILY into the Clash, Fuzztones, and Lords of the New Church. I turned them onto The Stranglers as well. As a band, we actually only did covers, Clash mostly. I think we may have started work on a couple of originals which, obviously, did not go anywhere...

Thanks for the note. Sorry to hear about the measles. I can empathize: I spent the holidays with a similar pesky ailment that pretty much ruined them for me until it was time to go back to work.. echhhh! In 1982-85, I was a young teacher at the Lycee Francais in NYC. Daniel was in one of my classes and since I was into music, he inquired if I played an instrument. I did play the guitar and he happened to need a guitar player for a band he was trying to start: The Cost of Living. That was before he hooked up with Matt, who also attended the school. I played with COL for about a year, until I quit teaching to pursue a (ill-fated) career in the music biz. Imagine my surprise, years later, when Daniel and Matt resurfaced in Nada Surf! I'm glad they stuck with it and I really think the latest album is brilliant. I recently got back in touch with them via the Nada Surf message board. That's my story and I'm sticking to it... Feel better!

Yeah..Speed is classic. I'm not the biggest Keanu fan, but Speed pretty much created that whole "movie as thrill-ride" thing. I especially like that part when Sandra Bullock hits the baby carriage with the bus, and she looks like she's about to vomit..and then she finds out that it only had cans in it..awesome!
