Buttercup Lane

Knitter, seamstress, actress, musician, writer, dreamer.

Addicted to sleep and coffee, in that order.

Dedicated reader and print-junkie (unable to ignore print in any form).

Librarian (currently public, children's).

Former unschooler/homeschooler (it rocked and yes I got into college--being a librarian requires a Master's degree).

Animal lover: currently I only have cats, but just wait till my students loans are paid off...

My favorite music:

The Who
The Divine Comedy
The Verve
U2
Edu Lobo

My favorite movies:

The Good Thief
comments: This is a great movie. It's fun, the setting is great, the story is good, the acting, directing, etc. are marvellous; it has a huge number of really attractive men of a variety of types in it (and even a cute girl)...
The Adventures of Robin Hood
comments: Nobody has ever swashbuckled better than Errol Flynn, and this is the best of his films. No, they aren't profound, tragic, particularly well-written or anything, they're just so darn enjoyable it's almost indecent.
Phil the Alien
comments: The most brilliant and utterly hysterical Canadian movie ever (and probably the most hysterical movie anywhere).
Labyrinth
comments: Damn I love this movie. It's so much fun, and I adore that it wasn't all a dream, after all. I hate fantasy like that. Why can't goblins, etc. be real in fiction?
The Last Waltz
comments: I watched this five times in theatres when it was re-released, and bought the DVD before I owned a DVD player. And please, I'm sure it isn't anything like the concert really was, but I wasn't born till `81

My favorite authors:

Elizabeth Goudge
comments: Especially "The Dean's Watch" and all the Elliot books (especially "The Herb of Grace/Pilgrim's Inn"), from which comes my diary name.
Rosemary Sutcliff
comments: Wrote lovely historical novels, especially "Simon", "Flame Coloured Taffeta", and "The Armourer's House", all of which are much better than the Roman stuff for which she's mostly remembered.
C.S. Lewis
comments: If you can read everything he ever wrote and not find one single sentence to love, then I'm very sorry for you.
Agatha Christie
comments: A lot of people are snobby about her, mostly people who haven't read much of anything that she wrote. Don't be one of them. Look especially for the novels she wrote as Mary Westmacott, which are quite unlike her mysteries, and astonishing.
Peter Dickinson
comments: Probably one of the most genius authors ever. Never written anything that isn't at least pretty good, and most of it's downright brilliant.

update April 6, 2020: Sorry, we just had 8+ hours downtime due to a server problem. Restoring from backups took soooo long, but everything is back and no data was lost. Ay yay yay! Anyhow, hope everyone is well with the virus stuff.
