biking is good, it's true. Unfortunately, Bear isn't into biking and we don't have any space for things that big in our tiny little one bedroom. besides, we're not trying to lose weight so much as just being fit, active people rather than couch-potatoes. It's more a "life-style" pact than a "dieting" pact. The track we run on is one of those spongy ones, so I'm not too worried about my knees. It's much better than running on cement. I've been wanting to get Bear to change his mind about biking, but I'm afraid he's right that we'd have to keep them outside in the rain and in Seattle they'd soon turn into rusted immobile sculptures by the end of the week.

It's ironic that when I popped open your latest entry, the song Learning to Fly by Pink Floyd began playing. That song...yeah, let's just say that it's how I feel like my life goes, most of the time. I'm winging it.

Hey there, do you ever watch, "Bizzare Foods" with Andrew Zimmer on the Travel Channel? He eats some really disgusting foods. I work with people who do odd things on a daily basis. They are either chronically mentally ill, and/or a combination of CMI and developmentally challenged. I would have to say "butt & poop diggers," we call them. Also the people who eat and or stuff anything into their orifices. For example, someone shoved paper towels up into his nose and when he opened his mouth you could see the paper towel hanging a bit in his throat. Yuck. I have seen alot in my job the last 16 years. How about a poop mask!! Now that was gross. Anyhoo, good question. I didn't even bat an eye. =^.^=

I understand that must feel bad, but the truth is that most people can't pay for college and have to take out big loans. Bear's family isn't giving him a single cent for college - and in their case it's not because they can't. Bear has had to take out massive loans, but the idea is that once he graduates he'll be able to find jobs in higher paying markets, so he'll be able to afford paying all those loan bills back each month. I have loans from college as well, and it's just another bill I pay each month along with the rent, electricity and internet. I think you have succeeded as a father, know why? YOUR KID ACTUALLY WANTS TO GO TO COLLEGE!! There are places in this country where people don't even think about it. I lived in such a place for two years. Kids just graduated high school, if even that, got manual labor jobs, knocked someone up and got married because of it or got married and then knocked someone up. They'd have two kids and a divorce by the time they were 20. No future. No college. The fact that your son values an education and is thinking about how he can get one proves that he is a success story. You've done a good job raising him to want more out of life, to be driven, and to have high, yet attainable, goals. You guys will figure out the financial stuff along the way. There's grants, loans, scholarships, and more out there to help you. He may have to work his way through college, but so what! That is a kid who has ambition, who sees that working hard now will pay off more later. You should be proud. Encourage his desire to go to college - help him look into outside scholarships.

hey, no worries. I took the test 3 times and got 3 different answers each time. Regarding ADD, I understand. My dad and brother both have ADHD, though my dad has grown out of the hyper part with age. While I tested negative for it myself, I very well could be a carrier of the gene and could have ADD or ADHD kids someday. I really recommend you read a book called, "Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception - A Hunter in a Farmer's World" by Thom Hartmann. In the book, Hartmann demonstrates that ADD can be associated with creativity, high achievement, and a most successful adaptive style. New findings support his theory linking ADD to the genetic makeup of men and women who hunted for their food in prehistoric times. Basically, the ADD brain has the best skills for surviving in a hunter-gatherer culture, unfortunately, 5,000 years ago we suddenly changed the way we live, opting for farming instead of hunting and gathering. Civilization rewards the "farming" mind better than the "hunter" mind, but ADDers aren't abnormal, they are uniquely gifted individuals in their own right. 5,000 ago you wouldn't have been seen as someone with a "learning deficiency", you more than likely would have been the warrior chieftain of your clan because you would have been the most successful hunter - your brain wiring literally making you a natural super warrior hunter. Hartmann takes a positive view of ADD, stressing the successes that those with ADD can have using their talents and skills rather than dwelling on their difficulties. The same characteristics that make a child hard to "control" in a classroom or at home make the adult that child will become a prime candidate for running his/her own business or taking a Fortune-500 company into the 21st century and beyond.... I could go on forever. My parents read this book a few years after we discovered that my brother had ADHD. Reading this book changed my family in so many positive ways, I can't even begin to describe it, because we all stopped asking "Why can't Nick just SIT STILL?" "Why can't Nick just PAY ATTENTION?" "Why can't Nick remember to do the one thing we've asked him to do 5 TIMES now?" And instead we realized that it was not my brother who was failing us, it was we who were failing him by not understand how he worked and giving him what he needed to succeed with the unique set of skills that he was born with. My parents immediately took my brother off all his ADHD prescriptions and took him out of public school and enrolled him in a private school specifically geared toward ADD/ADHD learners. We all stopped looking at ADHD as a disease and began to look at it as something really awesome. My brother stopped feeling like something was wrong with him, because nothing is wrong with him, and is now proud to be an ADHD young adult. I think reading this book will change your life. It will help you to turn your "disorder" back into a skill. By the end of it, you too will feel proud to wear the acronym ADD, just like my dad and brother. The book even talks about many famous historical figures who were undoubtedly ADD. My favorite quote from the book that has stuck with me over the years, "I'm not Attention Deficit, you're just boring!" (yeah, I know I know, I should have put this in an email... deal).

Are you IN the porn business? This sounds like a giant frat party (we called them "bathroom parties" in college because you could only gain entrance if you were in your underwear). As to your inquiry about taboos, I think it has mostly to do with the fact that this country was founded by Puritans, and their strict religious mindset is still heavily indoctrinated into practically every aspect of our culture today. As for the way women, generally, tend to have more of a problem with porn, etc, than men do, you have to remember that girls are raised completely differently about sex than boys are because girls have the "danger" of getting pregnant and thus paying for their "sins" by having to take responsibility for a child. Boys don't necessarily have to take responsibility for a child they sire, it's largely optional, and those who do take responsibility are treated as heroes for "doing the right thing," while girls who got knocked up are looked down upon as "sluts" and "whores" who "couldn't keep her legs together." Little girls are raised to be more strict about sex (to prevent premarital pregnancy) so it is little wonder that they act more strict about it as adults. For women, there is more judgment, more condemnation from society, for being sexually adventurous because there are more consequences for our actions. This is one reason I think a society that follows patriarchal lineage is flawed because you can't ever really know who the father of a child is, but there's no mistake who the mother is. The way patriarchal societies try to control "bastards" is by controlling female sexuality through cultural taboos, but it doesn't work (because even women are not naturally monogamous) and it's unhealthy for the women - causing all kinds of sexual dysfunction. It makes much more sense to pass surnames down through the matriarchal lineage, like the way the Navajo do it. So my long, rambling point is, go easy on us women, we're dealing with a lot of conflicting messages when it comes to sex. We're raised to have a stricter mindset about it, and that makes it harder to become liberated from societal taboos, even outdated ones. Often the first thing a little girl is told about sex is that it hurts and you bleed. Then as adults our reproductive organs swell and hurt every month with cramps, and -especially if your raised in a religious environment- you think of your period as "dirty" and "unclean." There is a lot more SHAME surrounding everything do to with sex, reproduction, and pleasure with girls. And I'm not even touching upon how intercourse is also all wrapped up in emotion with us as well. So when you see all those women at the festival, you should be amazed at how far they've come in liberating themselves from the stigmas of shame they were raised with as little girls in a Puritanical society.

my husband worked in an adult entertainment store for about 4 years. it was a really neat experience for both of us. he even got to meet jenna jameson (i was so jealous!). personally i find it funny how some people are so offended by one of the most natural things on earth. i have friends who are appalled by the fact that i subscribed to playboy or hustler for my hubby (and me) and i think it's sad that they aren't that close with their own spouse. of all our friends we have actually lasted the longest too... wonder if there's a correlation?

Yup, its a provoking subject, thats fersure. Personally, I have never had a problem with it. Some of the stuff Ive seen is, frankly, laughable and I view it in exactly the same way as I would any other implausible, pointless, badly acted film. There's some stuff I dont like to watch....but then I have to leave the room at the beginning of Cliffhanger, too. With a great deal of adult entertainment, I think the only people being exploited are the men who think that its 'real', the girls must be laughing up their sleeves! I could rattle on about this for ages. If you have any particularly splendid links, feel free to email to stepfordtartATdiarylandDOTcom. awww thanks! :) It's so nice to know people really liked them. I do sometimes think "I should really get into that again" but then I think there's no point really. Part of the fun also was competing in challenges and so on, and the designing community has waned since I stopped also. I'm also so rusty with HTML it's crazy. It is kinda nice finding people via those new link boxes to the right and finding they have one of my designs up there, kinda makes the few years I did it all worth it :) Although I should really take down the ones I did at the beginning - they are hideous! I was very proud of my silly little state when they found that Kansas church that pickets funerals guilty of inflicting pain and suffering on the father of the soldier. And awarded 17 million mostly in punitive damages. The only part that makes me sad is I didn't know they were picketing outside the courthouse (a block from my downtown office), I'd very much have liked to go quote a bit of appropriate scripture at them.

Duty fits as well. I tend to think of him more as honor though, because he has a nervous breakdown after his honor has been tarnished, and seeks the Davy Jones' heart as a way to reclaim his honor with the British Navy. Maybe he is a broken man because he has nothing to be dutiful to anymore though? Duty and Honor are pretty similar, especially with military. I kind of think Will acts out duty better when he swears to free his dad from Davy Jones though. Now I want to sit down and watch the trilogy again. I've only seen then each once in theaters.

You forgot Norrington (played by Jack Davenport) he is important to mention because these 3 men each pursue the different things that humans consider successes (or treasures) in life. Norrington = honor, Jack Sparrow = wealth, Will Turner = true love. Their battle on the revolving wheel (oh fortuna!) in the second film illustrates this point rather well. So when you ask which one women prefer, you're really asking do you prefer honor, wealth, or love in a man?

'Single parent' implies being the custodial parent. He is a Disney Dad. Disney Dads have the kids twice a month for about 40 hours at a shot. They eat crap food, fill the time with 'fun' and then get dumped back at Mom's wired, filthy and cranky. Custodial parents do the work, the Disney Dads strike martyr poses about how 'sad it is I'm separated from my kids' and get off scott-free from any real parental responsibility or sacrifice. Your co-worker can pound sand. YOU are a single parent. I am a single parent. He is a poseur. ~LA

Imagination. Therein lies the problem. I have a very vivid imagination. And based on some of my less mainstream experiences it can get way out there. That's why I like details -cause if I'm adding all the color it's gonna be wild.

The sun clib sounds like fun for you and the boys but it is one of those things that is very much a matter of taste. I agree with my wise old grandma who said that a naked man looks either ridiculous or untidy. The only time I even went to a nude resort, I spent the whole time laughing at the blokes. To my eyes, men look so much better with their undies ON!
|

la-the-sage : |

Most of my exchange students were nudists. Summer resorts, mostly. No big shocker about nekkid time with the SDGs. Though I AM giggling because I remember you saying something about Mick doing a security gig with you in July. Heh. I'll have to ask him, but since he was nearly nude during body building competitions I can't imagine doing security for the naturists would be beyond the pale. Actually since he's Irish, except for his head he is VERY pale. SPF 1,000,000 would be in order. ~LA the unfazed

Huh? I never said (nor did I even THINK in my innermost thoughts) that the guy was "evil." I said that his behavior was inappropriate, and it made me uncomfortable. How this became what you have turned it into is beyond my comprehension. I regret that I made you mad, but I guess we're even now.
|
| from
debsiobhan : |

Of course one sex shouldn't have greater power but I don't think one can honestly say it doesn't happen. We all have ideals of what we'd like to be and ideals of what we'd like the world to be. Even if we manage to get close to our ideal, we are only able to affect the world in the tiniest ripples. I also think that Yakety's situation hit a nerve with you because you are trying to pursue relationships with women. Because you are a good man you don't want to be put in a position of being thought "creepy". I think the key difference is actually paying attention to how women react when you interact. Even if women are polite there's usually some defensive body language if they want you to back off. Of course lots of people don't interact comfortably (men & women) so that's not a lock either. Your best defense is to always take no as no. You might miss an occasional maybe but on the whole it's a safer bet. It's pretty hard out there. Sometimes I find it totally amazing that people actually manage to get together.
|
| from
yaketyyak : |
|
Personally, I think that we are guilty of assigning baser motives to his actions because too many bad things happen to women under similar circumstances. We aren't BORN mistrusting. It's a learned behavior, based on certain actions. Plain and simple - it was inappropriate for The Guy to wait 50 minutes in a parking lot. And, I DID talk to my physical therapist about the situation. I'm also changing my days. Let's hope this will be the end of it.
|
| from
yaketyyak : |
|
For the record - I did NOT suspect the worst about The Guy until he exhibited creepy behavior. When we first started having firendly, casual chats at PT, I thought he was a really nice man. Then, when he asked for my number and I told him I am married, I expected that would be the end of it. Instead, he's hanging around parking lots waiting for me to come out. I think men and women alike are savvy enough to know the difference between "mysterious and romantic" and "creepy and stalker-ish."
|
| from
debsiobhan : |
|
You do know how to hit the hot topics. There's a lot of questions there and not one easy to answer. I can't offer a blanket answer and this box is too small for each one in turn - though I'd love to discuss it at length. There's more restriction and suspicion of mens actions because generally men are stronger and more easily able to force women physically than vice versa. To support the ideal of equality of women there is often a harsher standard placed on men. Now as for why women say they want one thing but really want another I'd say that's idealization. Some women have an idea of what they want. But the reality either doesn't or can't possibly match it. When they get what they asked for it wasn't what they thought it would be and is therefore unwanted or creepy. People have a hard time being honest with themselves as well as others. Finally in all things relationship there's a lot of self-worth at risk. It's often too hard to put yourself out there honestly and risk the hits to the ego.

I get what you're saying. This might be a time to stay in lockdown, just for the safety of everyone involved, or even consider a move. I understand not only the anger and frustration but also the overwhelming need to take your life and put it away from her prying eyes.
I don't think I'll ever understand how someone so distant from a kid's life can think they have an "in" to come back after such time away.

I have sort of a diff view. I believe in a woman's right to choose as well, although abortion would never be MY choice - I wouldn't pass judgement on anyone who did go that route, however I do think it's a difficult issue for many fathers out there, who's babies are being "built" and who may want those babies even if the mothers don't - who don't have a choice in the matter. Where's their choice?
