It is nothing more than what it appears

Other people have a purpose; I alone don't know. I drift like a wave on the ocean, I blow as aimless as the wind. - Tao Te Ching

My favorite music:

comments: I requested his music when I was 3, so the story goes. And also Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Beethoven. I spent my formative years listening to symphonies and concerti when I wasn't listening to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
The Doors
comments: Sigh...Jim Morrison. Keyboards, trippy, groovy, angst-filled erotically charged music that swirls inside your head. Other '60s and '70s rock too: Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Yes.
Jeff Buckley
comments: And Nick Drake. I think neither could have lived, I think both had a 'skin too few', too much inside. But they let it out and recorded it and we can listen to them, angels, again and again, and wish we could make love to them.
comments: His music moves me, takes me someplace deep inside, and it only makes me want him, all of him, for myself.
Miles Davis
comments: True indeed, he cooked at the Plugged Nickel, but "Kind of Blue" is a masterpiece of composition and improvisation. It transports and affects me beyond words.

My favorite movies:

American Beauty
comments: When I see plastic bags floating on breezes I think of this film. It touched me, deeply. The last time I saw it I couldn't get out of my seat when it was over. I was beside myself with feeling.
Run Lola Run
comments: Or, "Lola Rennt" for those of you who speak German. Haven't seen it? What's your problem?
The Thin Man
comments: I've replaced "Memento" with this movie because, well, it's better. Nick and Nora Charles are the ultimate in on screen duos. Have a martini and watch this movie! A classic!!!
Queen Margot
comments: Or, "La Reine Margot" for those of you who speak French. Vincent Perez, Isabelle Adjani, the Medicis, need I say more? Oh, Full Frontal Nudity.
comments: I'm replacing "Harold and Maude", one of my all-time favorites (!), with this, my new favorite movie. It's too beautiful, it's so sensual, it's everything life should be. I LOVE this movie, more than I can describe.

My favorite authors:

Barbara Kingsolver
comments: Kingsolver rocks! She rules! Read Bean Trees, read Animal Dreams - she's fantastic. And I met her.
Dave Eggers
comments: His: A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is just that. This guy is amazingly neurotic and intelligent. I hope he writes more and more.
Terry Brooks
comments: Okay, he's derivative, but his books of fantasy are pure fun, pure escapist fun.....even if he uses the word "wordlessly" too much. And I met him.
Anthony Bourdain
comments: Kitchen Confidential, A Cook's Tour, Typhoid Mary - And one day I'll read his novels too. He's fantastic, acerbic, irreverant and funny as hell. And, yes, I met him too.
Stephen King
comments: When I was a teenager I would spend Summers lying in the backyard, absorbing the sun around my bikini, a Stephen King novel in hand. He tells a great story, if he veers a bit. Nothing a little editing couldn't fix.

update April 6, 2020: Sorry, we just had 8+ hours downtime due to a server problem. Restoring from backups took soooo long, but everything is back and no data was lost. Ay yay yay! Anyhow, hope everyone is well with the virus stuff.
