Lol. I just realized I posted a note here about the Roches/Lynn Samuels earlier - probably last Christmas. That'll learn me to not check first. Hey, do you EVER respond to notes? Or am I just throwing stuff into the void here? Just curious if I'm being a pain in the ass by writing these or not....
from dangerspouse :
I used to be friends with the late, unbelievably awesome, Lynn Samuels. Back when the Roches were starting to get popular around here she recommended another 3-sister group, "Tres Noir". This was back when Lynn was still a stalwart on 'BAI. Sadly, that group never really caught hold and I haven't seen anything from them in years. But the Roches - wow. (Their mother lived not to far from me, and every year she sang in the chorus during the Warwick holiday concert until her death this year. Two or three years ago Suzzie showed up at the concert also, which was very nice.)

Can't get down to Bleeker Street tonight, so I'll have to wish you happy birthday here instead. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Stick a candle in that egg and cheese sandwich :)
from dangerspouse :
So you were in Jersey, but forgot the Taylor Pork Roll, huh? Ok, listen: I get it that you don't like me for some reason, even though we're practically neighbors and we're both on the radio and we both love the independent music muses, and yadda yadda yadda. Ok, you can't even be bothered to leave me a return note at my diary even after I dogged down Taylor Ham info for you. NONETHELESS...if you shoot me your mailing address, I'll be happy to go buy a tube of said TPR and mail it out to you. Just because you seem like a bit of a kindred spirit, and I enjoy a lot of the stuff you put up. Waddaya say?
from dangerspouse :
Taylor Pork Roll does have a website ( http://jerseyporkroll.com/ ). Their customer service line will give you a definitive answer about where in the City you might find it - if at all. Off the top of my head, I think FreshDirect is the only reliable source ( https://www.freshdirect.com/pdp.jsp;jsessionid=f2JGWmnfkD2jRCv7Ghk48nGhnXX4pLXy6gv7tHgpJML1Xm3zjCCG!1811842319!1915045329?catId=cchm_boil&productId=del_taylor_prkrll ). Good luck! That stuff really is worth Jonesing for :)
from dangerspouse :
The mother of the Roche girls lives only a few miles from me, and she sings in a local chorale. Every year the chorale puts on a Christmas concert, and often one or more of the daughters will join in for that. Also - Suzzy and her daughter Lucy tour together, and I know they've played gigs around the City. Have you ever caught them? (BTW, I used to correspond with the late, great Lynn Samuels, and she told me the Roche sisters were bitches when she interviewed them on WBAI. Very standoffish. She preferred another trio of singing sisters called "Tres Noir", whom I've never heard of since. You?)
from dangerspouse :
Lol. Not gonna happen, huh? Oh well, I gave it a shot....
from dangerspouse :
I'm one of the 30-odd people who read your "Bobtown" entry, and yeah, it was all that. Great clip. But what's it take to get you to reciprocate with a note in return, especially if one takes the time to drop a comment on you unrequited? Netiquette man, netiquette! Makes it tough to justify coming back to read more entries when one feels they are being studiously ignored. My fragile ego demands a return note, dammit!
from dangerspouse :
I've gotta say, as a lifelong radio...uh..."DJ"? "Announcer"? "Guy-on-the-air"? Whatever. As a schmoe who's sole living has been made behind a mic in the NYC market for the past 26 years, I'm very jealous. I'd give anything to do a shift again on a station with no set-in-stone playlist, no hot clock, and engineer hotlining frantically every time there's more than one breath's worth of dead air. Kudos to you; hope you had as much fun as it sounds like you had! I'd bet my Grado SR125's that you did :) (ps. Those are great cans if you're looking to do more gigs and need a set of your own. And, they're made in Brooklyn!)

Just checking to see how many diarylanders still actually check their notes and stay active.

Uri Geller would be very proud of you, I'm sure. Good luck with that going forward. (BTW, how was the beer salami? I may be heading up towards Columbus Circle tomorrow or Thursday, and that might be on the To-Buy list now. Thanks!)

I enjoyed your video. I particularly liked the shot of the sun coming through the trees. Nice choice for the music as well!

Just wanted to send you a hug of solidarity about mental health and all that, from across the pond x

I love that LIRR sign! I lasted less than a year commuting from the Island. I was the female version of Dashing Dan more often than not.
from dangerspouse :
Hi! I just stumbled across your diary, and what a great account you gave of being in the City during Sandy-Con. I loved it. As it happens, I was stranded in Rutherford - just across the Hudson from you - up until a few hours ago, doing the radio reporter thing (including briefly with Dennis Elsas, btw, on 'FUV). I do want to say that it's not really mis-management, poor planning or inadequate infrastructure that makes potable water and working toilets scarce during storms like Sandy. I'm too tired to go into the details I learned while covering the story for the last three days (and it would bore you to tears anyway, involving as it does things like physics, fluid dynamics, and dementors....I think). But you can trust me on this. After all, I'm in the media! (Oh, and next storm I'll use that headline on the air. Sorry we all missed it this time.) :)

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2010/12/19/a-holiday-message-from-ricky-gervais-why-im-an-atheist/ It seems odd to be recommending Ricky Gervais, but he has some great points about religion.
from annanotbob2 :
Hope your episode passes as quickly and painlessly as possible. Thanks for linking to Richard Thompson - I haven't thought of him in a while, but I'm now going to play "I want to see the bright lights tonight" which was the first album I ever downloaded. Take care, buddy x
from annanotbob :
Hiya - nothing happens when I press the bar saying 'tell the world what you think of me'. Just wanted to say (again, probably) that I love the selection of quotes at the top of your page and I really enjoyed this entry, especially the pics of the park and most especially the one of the rock with striations. Congrats on taking your time and meandering there. Best wishes, Anna x
from atwowaydream :
Where The Wild Things Are. . . that film was so dazzling, the way it was directed made me feel as though I was a child, somersaulting and rushing through the wilderness and desert plains. Very child-like indeed. Glad you always enjoyed it.
from annanotbob :
OK, so where are other people leaving notes? I keep wanting to comment, then feel like a stalker when I see all the notes are from me. Whatever. I so agree with you about the dangers of diagnosis, which I encountered quite often when I was teaching and even more so now I'm in the mental health system. My lot say that what got us to this point probably wasn't our fault, but how we proceed from here is our responsibility. I too count things a lot - very soothing. As you seem to be after reader feedback, I prefer the more personal, meandering entries like this one, to the ones about music, but I think you have to please yourself in this blogging business. All the best, Anna
from annanotbob :
Hurrah! Congratulations!!!
from annanotbob :
Thanks for the note about the bullet points. I just loved reading that entry about your train of thought and Terry Pratchett.

Hey. Just so you know its not a localised problem, I had no end of trouble getting my local Depot people to understand what a 'metre rule' was. The best they could do was a tape measure. I found them myself in the end. How do these people get jobs in sales when they dont know their product? *sheesh*. s x

I can't remember how I found you? I'm thinking it must have been thru the recent update feature? I like to check out new diaries, but most of them are not very interesting. Your diary is interesting.

the first part of portrait is incredible. joyce gets the childhood brain perfectly. then stephen grows up to be a pompous asshole and the whole thing falls apart. i have trouble enjoying books when i don't like the protagonist. but read the whole thing anyway, at least for the language.

the song: walkin' up little neck bay, walkin' to the north, walkin' up little neck bay, walkin' back and forth! and there were lots of verses, but they were all pretty much, "well, i'm walkin' down the street, goin' to open moe's bar, and i'm singin' what i'm thinkin', hey, look at that dog!" :)
from goovie :
i don't know who you're accusing of plagiarism, but you do know that the pianist was a true story, right? it's not plagiarism if you write about something that happened in real life.

Gordon, darling dearest, have I told you lately how I adore you? The Budgiedome Scouts it shall be, for boys and girls of all ages, genders, and species. The official uniform is whatever you want to wear, the more mismatched the better. The flag is Canadian; the anthem is sung in French. The crest is an offset "M", surrounded by a non-quite-full circle, highlighted by an umlaut. The marching cry (okay, it's really more like a disorganized-clambering cry when you're lugging a tarp down s hill at 6 am) is "Request-o-Rama!" Worship of higher power(s) is entirely optional, but if one is of the believing persuasion, worthy deities include but are not limited to Murray or Lawrence, or perhaps me. Or you. Maybe Skippy. Merit badges include: hotwater outdoor showering; budgiedome assembly; jamming; spork sculpture; creative fireplay; and hillclimbing. National meetings occur once a year in July, but subgroupings (not troops but "bands") meet whenever they feel like it, location determined by the proximity of fine indie entertainment and free lodging.

sure, there was more music than disco in the 70s, but disco is a crowd pleaser. when you're picking music for a crowd and a situation like that, your goal isn't to enlighten them about the 1970s underground rock scene, you're trying to keep them energized, and you're also trying to cater to the lowest, drunkest common denominator. hence, disco.
from goovie :
hrm. you can go ahead and move out to lincoln park if you want, but you won't see me or neal, since we don't live there.

from glitterfaery :
Gordon, I agree with you on the first amendment issues regarding hate crimes legislation. Not snuffing out an individual's freedom of speech just because we find it repugnant is an issue that concerns anyone who cares about universal civil rights. It's very important to focus on the crime's motivation, and not simply that a slur or other derogatory class reference was used during its commission. The verbal assault, hurtful as it may be, might or might not have a lot to do with the reason for the crime -- not every schoolyard taunt qualifies as a "hate crime" even if there's some pummelling involved, and not every hate crime perp necessarily resorts to verbal abuse in the process of his crime. But in some cases it's pretty damned clear that the perp has been motivated by his dislikes to make a violent societal statement, and that's where I think hate crimes need to be countered by a law with some teeth in it -- for exactly the reason of protecting society at large from that sort of intimidating and divisive action. A real hate crime transcends the actual victim(s) and perp(s) and amounts to a commando-like declaration of war -- or at least hunting season -- on the targeted group.

i just wonder if frau-nano is any relation to any of my old housemates. she sure has their amazing talent for psychoanalysis. now if you'll excuse me, i'm going to go put on a long nightgown to show that i'm confused about my sexuality.
from glitterfaery :
So glad you're feeling like a sunshiny day again. :) I'm rather perplexed by your talent for initiating brouhahas though. I read the Nanowrimo forums, and now I almost want to join just so I can fire back ... but I have no intention of getting involved in the word count game, so it really holds no other attraction to me than the essential and irresistible lure of flaming the pants off Frau-Nano. (If she wants someone to psychoanalyse her in turn, since she analysed you free of charge and without solicitation, I'd be delighted to oblige :> ). Seriously, she reminds me of my sister-in-law -- someone whose main goal in life seems to be telling others everything they're doing wrong in the harshest and most arrogant way possible, instead of doing anything constructive herself. As for your brilliant and incisive novel, I think you've mastered the art of timelessness, and you certainly have a knack for setting up the ending within the first paragraph.
from zaph :
"frau-nano," the anonymous coward, has decided that humour has no place in Nanowrimo. according to the FAQ on nanowrimo.org: "<B>Can anyone participate in NaNoWriMo?</B> No. People looking to write classy, complex novels should not participate. People who take their writing very seriously should also go elsewhere. Everyone else, though, is warmly welcomed." not only that, but it's not a competition. so what if he makes a joke novel? did <i>anyone</i> take this seriously? it doesn't diminish the potential value of yours (but I think your holier-than-thou attitude sure does - it makes me not want to ever read anything you write, really)
from lilacgirl :
i'd tell eva-braun-frau-nano-what's-her-butt to shut the hell up. good grief. sure you cheated, but in every situation there's a line... and she totally crossed it.

hmm. i seem to recall several times that matt was very similar to jian. but nobody ever lsitens to me, do they. it's so tough to be me. i'm going to write a six-song ep about it.
from goovie :
you got to play with vin *and* enjoy the liquid silk voice of everyone's favorite uncle, john platt, in the space of two days? lucky. next thing i know you'll be telling me that you met the dude from "the no show."
from goovie :
and just what's wrong with candy-ass happy folk? sometimes you need it. just like sometimes you need the complete opposite. which is why i'm going to see david this week. :) ps: if you have nothing to do on monday, come down and we'll go to david and kate's show at david's house. mmmm...david.
from goovie :
hee. i came here to post exactly what jaci just posted. but i also wanted to add that, in addition to being great singers, songwriters, and arrangers (all of which, i think, contribute to musicianship), richard is a classically trained pianist (and vocalist), bernie is a guitarist and bassist, skippy plays trumpet, gregory plays saxophone...
from athena98122 :
hrm. i'm somehow bothered by the n/a for dvn on musicianship. i understand that you mean traditional instruments, but where does vocal arrangement fit in? it's more than "mere" singing and different from songwriting. i think i'm thinking about this too much.
from goovie :
oOdoo da-doo doo, doo, doo-da doo dooOo
from goovie :
hey bastard, thanks for joining the dvn ring like a good bernardo jose stalker. :) oh, and just to clarify, jaci, he was referring to frucon '00, not '01.
from athena98122 :
*cries* i am getting -no- love. -i- came over to you at frucon. you were sitting with betsy. and you were talking about how you didn't like the indigo girls. but fine. forget me. whatever. i'm used to it.
from inthemiddle :
When my brother was in 5th grade at good ol' P.S. 114 his teacher was good ol' stubborn Mrs. Neuman. *shudder* One day the class was being taught about presidential assasinations. My brother, being a big musical theater fan (and yet he's not gay... what a pity) knew *all* about presidential assasins from the Stephen Sondheim musical <i>Assasins</i> and subsequent research he'd done on the subject. The teacher asked for names of presidents who had been assasinated and my brother pointed out Ronald Regan. The teacher looked at him funny and said "Sidney, Ronald Regan is still alive, you know that." Sid said "But he was shot. Assasinated also applies to injury." The teacher denied this vehemently. An argument ensued and my brother went and got the dictionary. He was absolutely correct. At that moment Mrs. Neuman knew that Sidney was the third first-born of the Solomon siblings.
from goovie :
not just teachers. bosses, too.
from athena98122 :
eep! gordon's the mayor! good luck with that whole ascension thing, and watch out for germs. :D
from goovie :
hee. i love the mayor. i love you, too. and adam busch was an extra on "lancelot link, secret chimp." :)
from renita :
gah! I hope Gellaisn't making fireworks... she's in my apartment RIGHT NOW! she'll get me evicted!!!!
from mischler :
Speaking of young female singers opening for Fruvous, Sarah Harmer herself is one of them... http://www.fruvous.com/99rev/990430.html
from athena98122 :
another random note - everytime i see susan mckeown in concert listings she sets off my susan werner -and- erin mckeown alarms.
from goovie :
annie hayden? she's not in yo la tengo. ira is, tho. mmmmm...ira.
from goovie :
yeah. cos you certainly don't love me otherwise. *cough* anyway, neal's the one who calls me a rubik's cube with red hair. take it up with him. :) and, reading jaci's note, lisabeth was at frff last year? um. d'oh.
from athena98122 :
*random note* i *heart* lisabeth weber. she was one of the new artists i splurged on at frff (along with zoe and eric of course)

10:16 p.m.

Gordon, you probably don't know me, but I've been admiring your witty, wise, and shrewd work since ... since, like ... February! Goovie's links are considered Holy Writ around here -- her taste is excellent, as you know.

While perambulating around D*land tonight I clicked on one of her old links to you. Then I saw about your dad. I am so sorry. I never got to know my dad, and your closeness really touched me. I felt admiration, though far away, for you both.

With sympathy and warmest regards, I remain,

Your fan in DC,

-- Todd Webb
from goovie :
thank you for being a voice of sanity.
from goovie :
i didn't say he was the lead singer. cos. um. i don't think he was. and you need to stop using "take me out to the ballgame" as an entry title; you've used it at least three times already.
from goovie :
bwah. you rock the casbah, dude. and you know i totally agree with you about ted bundy. and re: my last note, i realized after i sent it that you were probably talking about joni's most recent cd, which *is* both sides now, isn't it? yeah. but her second cd is still called clouds. i win. give me a tiara. *sexygooviedance*
from goovie :
the album is called clouds. the song is called both sides now. freak.
from goovie :
um, christine's "closing song" isn't new. she and julie sang it both times when we saw them at the bottom line. she just didn't sing it at the rams head show, is all. i guess we're not having the waffle party, then? shame.
from athena98122 :
ooh. barbershop music is evil? and here i only thought it was taking over the world =) tell me more! tell me more! *hug*
from goovie :
baaaaahahaha. you rock the casbah, dude. i love you. :)
from goovie :
*while*. not *as*. while, while, while. i'll yet at you some more when you get here in a few hours. *hugs*
from athena98122 :
i love the new layout. so much easier on the eyes *hug*
from athena98122 :
'i must go down to the sea again' you know. that was one of the first poems i had to memorize. and one of the last, as well. wish we had to do more of that. i'm too much of a perfectionist to try to write more here. but thanks. made me smile with poetry today instead of with a classic comedy reference. hows about that? *hug*
from da-neko :
You have actually read Cabell, you gotta be the first.... Neko

Just another wandering nosybody stopping in to say Hi! I am delighted to find a Hank Williams fan. I need Hank Williams like oxygen. Oddly though he and Patsy Cline are the only "country" artists I own on CD. Anyhow thanks the happy knowledge that I'm not the only one who is keeping Hank Williams alive in our memories. ~LA

Timothy McVeigh died for the sins of our government. Get real.

from benderl :
I thought I was your favorite nintendo game *sniffles* I like buttons!
from athena98122 :
well, i'm a little bitter that you didn't put me as a favorite read *pout* but i'll get over it.
from goovie :
Surprise, surprise, I'm the first to sign your analyzer...Gordon, you know you totally rock, and so does Wise Madness. *hugs*
