you deleted your entire diary? or did diaryland to inactivity? :(
from starzero :
did you receive the september package?
from likeaforest :
re: umbrellas in london: !!! also, i should say that the entry where you mentioned reading paperbacks in graveyards really made me swoon.
from likeaforest :
yes, most likely everyone everywhere is obsessed with having conversations about where they live. i think the difference i notice in the conversations here is that they usually seem to set up this very curious binary of "california vs. the rest of the united states." which maybe in some weird way makes sense. also, maybe i'd feel differently if i actually lived there, but i sort of have a fondness for ohio, and the way it manages to feel midwestern and a bit east coast all at once. i drove through it many a time when going back and forth from school to home (or vice versa), always listening to abba or blondie (the only two tapes my mum and i could agree on). so now whenever i hear 'dancing queen' i think of ohio. no joke.
from funjules :
What a giant bunch of asshats. I'm glad to hear all of you are hanging in there. I just started doing patient escorting there, and I'm beyond bummed that I have to work tomorrow. Stay safe!
from pragmatics :
now that i think about it, i think that that is the book from which i got the habit of saying "going to ground" when i mean to say "fell off of something". that's strange: i don't remember much else about the book but those little tricks of language. i am reading more books about whores. 2004 has been a year for reading about loose women, so far.
from pragmatics :
i read house of god i think when i was in high school, and i remember it being really funny. that's the one with the gomers, right?
from pragmatics :
i tried, for a while, the not-locking-the-pets-out-of-the-bedroom. the experiment was killed by unairconditioned bedroom in august (twenty-odd pounds of rambunctious cat + sixty-odd pounds of panting & shedding dog + one-hundred-and-thirty-odd pounds of sweaty girl = long nights of torment and waking up with FUR stuck to EYEBALLS) and the fact that the pets seem to think that three in the morning is a perfectly appropriate time to: 1) wrestle on the bed/my torso, 2) check to see if i am still there by sticking either a snout or a paw into my eye, and/or 3) try to circumnavigate the room from the tops of the 8 foot bookshelves (it can't be done). the situation was, quite simply, impossible -- but the pets have still not forgiven me, i think. i love them, but they run wild. this is what happens when you raise up a passel of freethinking pets.
from likeaforest :
actually, i did not know of the anne carson book!! i was so excited that i immediately fled to my school's library to look for it. unfortunately, one copy was checked out and the other had mysteriously vanished. perhaps i should stop being a cheapskate and go buy my own copy?
from pragmatics :
i read "old, invalid bus passes" with the wrong intonation, and then had an image of bedridden bus passes, like charlie's grandparents in charlie and the chocolate factory.
from pragmatics :
ted from queer eye is one of my secret boyfriends. he will make me cups of chocolate filled with chocolate mousse, and we will grill things and drink fancy drinks. then we will go home to our respective boyfriends. perfect!
from softblossoms :
ah! glad you are back. whee! (it's springtime)
from pragmatics :
are you the one logging on from cscc? the big link on their home page to their concealed weapons policy made me concerned for you, but then i noticed that it said you CAN'T carry concealed...and it didn't make me feel much better, really.
from idreamtrains :
i am good! i will send you the asswordpay on the riendsterfay. i can't wait to read what you write!! also, i restarted idreamtrains, which is open.
from frankohara :
hi. glad you're back. hope you're well.
from myeels :
you said "up [my] alley"!!!! It's so weird because I'd never heard of the ring before, and then today at my appointment they were all talking about it. It seems really weird...I don't know. Having something up inside you all the time? But then she said the patch is just the same as the ring, only you wear it outside your body. Which I was more comfortable with. I am real happy about these hormonal methods which are way lower doses than The Pill. I think I will try the patch and just monitor my body really closely. But seriously--the ring?? Isn't that WEIRD?? I mean, in a cool way, like sci-fi!! I am glad to see that in spite of the government's best efforts, birth control research/ new products are still making slow and steady headway. >THANKS!!
from frankohara :
new york's arms are wide open and welcoming. i am well, have been deeply involved with the music of John Cage (reading and singing) and it has been wonderful. take care.
from citizenjane :
miss you! hope all is well.
from frankohara :
looks like we've both gone incognito from d-land. this is just to say that i hope you are well. cheers, frank.
from might :
drat and blast! the dada machine fooled me and said that the previous message dadaiste had not been left! oh well -- there were some additions that had to be made...
from likeaforest :
o dear, i wasn't aware that there was a mrs. if only there was some handy website that kept me abreast of the marital status of beloved indie boys, i wouldn't have these sorts of problems. i wonder if jeff mangums available...hmm.
from likeaforest :
!!! i just bought that album this weekend and have been obsessively listening to it ever since. its so good; i'm pretty sure mr. darnielle and i are going to have to get married.
from chancel :
you've come around to billy collins?! ick! ick! of course the new poet laureate is (will be?) louise gluck, whom i love. so.
from eruath :
speaking of kristen hersh... I saw her with delerium two weeks ago. she gushes sunlight and reminds me of debbie from blondie back in the good ol' days. whenever she was on stage, she took up all the space. she also got mad at the crowd because they weren't dancing... (i was) but that's detroit. nobody dances if there's no dj.
from peth :
oh! you are on friendster. the new layout is so lovely you know. we could be friends.
from likeaforest :
happened to stumble upon your journal, and just thought i'd mention that i like it lots. if you ever pursue that lovely vegan bed and breakfast idea, please let me know, and i'll kindly visit and clamor for pancakes.
from frankohara :
the poem is "A True Account of Talking to the Sun on Fire Island." and it is that kind of day here too.
from frankohara :
the all caps for Holland 1945 is my way of typing out the energy of that song. i think "two headed boy" would definately get mixed caps, if not all lower case. . .
from frankohara :
yay! you're back!
from delighted :
the future circus? I am saved as your favourite with a comment reading the future circus? Can I cyber hug you forever and tell my friends how wonderful you are?
from eruath :
about psychotropics - from several entries ago. Don't you think the world was a better place when we just let people go crazy and made shamans out of them?
from might :
"mumbledypeg"
from frankohara :
yay! thank you for reminding me to listent to the 6ths today. . .yum.
from eruath :
Perhaps your neighbors work nights and sleep when you get up. Or maybe they are insomniacs. Deaf insomniacs. There was an ice storm here last night. I walked out of the house this morning and slid all the way to the garage,10ft, because the pavement is gently sloped. The world looks magical and sometimes eerie when seen through a crystal sheath.
from eruath :
I imagine I am using these note thingies like you people who pay for the extra stuff use the "comment" option... I hope that doesn't bug anybody. I just read the last several of your entries and have these things to say: Wumpscut! In combination with you that makes me grin. You should read Tolstoy and Macbeth. I like Macbeth because it's awfully dark, full of spirits and magic and spooky forests. I like Tolstoy because his short stories sometimes make my belly ache they are so true to the unfortunate human condition. I think you did right with your online assignment. Though I personally liked the "what I would have liked to have written" version better, culture is held together only by a sense of what is polite, and speaking truth without giving offense should be the rule when addressing strangers. Lastly... Cats! Better than children in many ways... What are their names? What are they like?
from eruath :
hmmm. perhaps with your new favorite book you already know what's wrong? In any case, you should probably mention it to your doctor. I would not drink gin if I were you, but probably because I drank far too much of it this last weekend and am in no hurry to duplicate the unfortunate consequences. As far as compassion for the "enemy" goes, I'm afraid I haven't come across an awful lot of it here either. Too bad, as compassion is the only thing which will save us. I hope you feel better soon.
from peth :
I will keep your hands off your secret boyfriend, but you cannot keep me from thinking about his nose.
from eruath :
My friend Laura and I make an annual holiday of watching Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. It was remarkably hard to find the soundtrack until we realized it was possible to order it online. I believe the moralizing monologue at the end is absolutely my favorite bit of the whole film.
from ilovethom :
I love adrien brody as well! I wish to marry him! eep.
from eruath :
ok. I won't worry. I'm very much looking forward to hearing from you!
from eruath :
There's so much I don't know. The right thing to say for example. I'm afraid of this opportunity. That it will pass and I'll have lost the strange and beautiful geometry of your words, the slanted, golden light and shadow of knowing you. I miss you. I guess that's all I'm trying to say. I would like to get to know you again. Write to me if you want. I would be glad to hear about your life now. [email protected]
from eruath :
i'm all silly inside! ...butterflies in the stomach and everything! you must mean sunshine... truth be told, i've googled you both more than once in the last couple years. that's how i came across you here in diaryland. i'm glad ... about your secret message, i don't believe you will see the people you know as walking complexes of tissues and organs, but rather you will see all human beings in a new light, with a dimension added to them. a frailty and wonder which will make them more precious.
from eruath :
a hiding tree! I've got one of those, except it's rumored that fairies live in the knot hole, so i speak quietly my questions rather than clutter up their living room. i've been reading some of your entries and i'm beginning to believe you may be the same ricka i knew once years ago. have you ever lived in kentucky? i wonder. i am full of sighs at the thought.
from teclo :
what i think what i was saying in the entire "west side" "east side" entry, is that when i lived in the short north, people were always asking me whether i lived on the "east side" (where the speculated degenerates smoking crack pipes, raping women, and breaking into cars lived) of high street, or the "west side" of high street (where the young up and comers lived) ... not east side as in bexley, or west side like galloway, but just the east and west sides of the street.
from citizenjane :
i never told you how good that batch of garam masala cookies tasted. they were divine. i keep thinking of making more with a bit of almond extract. i love that almond extract.
from bluecinema :
my gay ex-roommate and i were always all about that part with galadriel. my other favorite is on the snowy mountain after they get out of moriah, elijah turns around with this look on his face about to cry. i say give the boy his oscar. what an expressive face.
from anarchivist :
o! ricka! re: your latest entry, re: law and order; my partner & i got the law and order computer game from her parents for x-mas! we haven't played it yet but it looks great!
from kissoff :
oh see, this is why drinking and typing are a bad combination. warn not warm
from kissoff :
OH OH, upon reading your diary...playing on computer was " I saw you standing in the airport with your chihuahua in your hand". A bit of magnetic fields kismet. It's confirmed then, my computer is in some way smitten with yours. I will warm you though and you can pass on the message. He's a bit of an asshole( shhh... this is on the q.t if you know what I mean), unpredicatable, totally flakey, has frequent episodes of ahem "permformance anxiety" and is a complete and utter commitment phobe. Excellent taste in music though.
from kissoff :
thank you so much for your very sweet email. I haven't reached the drawing hearts all over my notebook stage yet but yeah, it's a pretty good feeling so far. By the way, anyone who recognizes a liz phair lyric gets my complete undying respect. Exile in guyville is filled with rich lines . " weave my disgust into fame". Brilliant
from spunkygypsy :
I found you via Elspeth, and aren't you the loveliest thing ever? (why yes, indeed you are). I am curious what you mean by radical existentialist catholic...can you clue me in, mayhaps? I think of myself as Catholic in the ways of Daniel Berrigan and all the cool nuns I've met at peace rallies, loving life every way they can...oh, but I babble. Please oh please tell me more if you get the chance.

from might :
welcome back, lady!!
from idreamtrains :
ricka!! glad to know your back with a new computer. nice to see you again.
from idreamtrains :
crap. you would think that being a genius that i could a least spell the word right.
from idreamtrains :
how are you? things with me have been well. or, um, sometimes well and sometimes not well. really they've been really good and i think that maybe i am just experiencing growing pains, and those growing pains have been, um, painful. how did the robot tape work out? after reading you and addie's frequent talk of mix tapes i have finally been inspired to make a mix tape for myself. it's been a really long while and i have to say that i'm still a mix tape GENUIS. pure genius. so be comforted in the fact that you have unintentionally improved the quality of life of a person who lives in a galaxy far, far away.
from idreamtrains :
oh ricka, i miss your writing. i would say i miss YOU but i don't really know you. but i truly miss your writing. schniff.
from snailandsky :
dude, it won't let me into your g-book! Do you read these notes?? I LOVED THE SECRET HISTORY!!! IT WAS SO AWESOME! I am so glad I listened to your recommendation! It took me like 10 pages to get into it, and then suddenly I was unable to put it down. I read it ALL DAY AT WORK yesterday! Thank you so much...do you have any other recommendations? You are my new recommendation guru. RAD!
