Glad you're still writing, and hoping you're well. E

i'm a'lockin' up for now. userid: dog passwd: fur Emily

While I admire your dressing in 1940s styles, I hope I can be pretentious while wearing denim. I only wear Italian denim (or at least I've claimed to do that, which is probably worse). And, like Freud who scorned to discriminate between civilisation and culture, I refuse to acknowledge a difference between pretentious and supremely awesome. I feel I've not used enough punctuation marks in this note.
from ottodixless :
Help! I too admire the em dash (though not in HTML); write "&c"; drink fairtrade coffee; watch lots of foreign movies (other than American); have recently downloaded a lot of Nico; and looked at the New Yorker website only 2 days ago despite not even being on the same continent as its eponym. Am I pretentious? (oh, of course I am.) I think writing lists with semicolons should probably be in there too. Only my denim can save me!
from nosuperman :
thanks lauren! i will be sure to keep you updated on what is happening in my life. hopefully marietta will stay dry enough for you to return. have a great semester!
from vidapacifica :
Happy New Year to you, too!
from manchmal :
congrats, lauren! I may be in pittsburgh myself next year. I love it there. So what program did you apply to?
from wonderwall :
good luck with the grad school apps. i remember the stress well. on the bright side, once you get in i think you will do really well. someone independent and smart like you is the perfect grad student :)
from mirasoprano :
I was really amused by your note, especially since I headed directly to your diary after reading the news on cnn.com! Since you were at the fore of the fans who knew the title of book six, I sort of figured that you'd have a diary entry entirely devoted to how to navigate J.K.'s website to find the announcement of the release date. Alas, that was not to be -- important things (like Harry Potter and fan obsession) tend to get away from us during the busy holiday season. Speaking of which, I hope you're having a lovely vacation! And start the countdown to July 16!
from omnipre5ence :
:) Slow days are the best.
from manchmal :
Sideways is fantastic. Closer is...well, I think it is also fantastic, though some people hated it. It's driving me crazy, too, that we can't get any decent films around here! I've had to drive to Columbus every weekend for entertainment. BTW, I don't get a scroll bar to read all the text in your new design. I'm using Safari. Hope you're well, E.
from wonderwall :
how bout a quote from "A Long December" by the counting crows? "guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower, makes you talk a little lower..." or another good one from that song, there's lots. :)
from nightingale- :
Hmm, you seem to be a redheaded, vegetarian liberal who holds a high regard for nature. That's funny, cause the last time I checked, I was all of those things as well. Bottom line- you're awesome. Just thought you might like to know.
from obscuresoul :
Oh, crap. A few typos in that rather long message. I can't edit them, so I hope you know what I mean.
from obscuresoul :
I tried to leave you a comment rather than a note, but the link wasnt working. anyway, i got back to school in a week and a half and i just got a hair cut AND a new pair of glasses. A very good choice indeed, for me at least, because a new physical image always strengthens my self-image and self-confidence and self-esteem, and all those other self's. I'd hate to admit it, but my mom usually pays for these kinds of things, but this time I spent my own hard-earned money, and it is that much more satisfying. Also, nerdgasm is by far the best made-up word I've ever heard. I may steal it and use it myself. --angela
from vacantmemory :
i stumbled upon your diary....finding your thoughts and perspectives rather intriguing, i browsed for awhile, found a seat under the willow tree, and made my self comfortable....thank you
from uurabbit :
thank you for the note. I have been thinking about joining the discussion board. I'm just trying to figure things out, and it's nice to know that other people are going through the same kind of thing.
from mirasoprano :
Hi again, Lauren. For some reason, I am still occupied with this scar scandal, probably because I am beginning to feel somewhat empowered to ponder this mystery, simply because another individual witnessed the same phenomenon. Therefore, if someone else perceived it, it must exist. Lovely. So, do you think that Cuaron purposely allowed the scar to switch locales? From what I know of Cuaron, he wouldn't exactly pass up a chance to be subversive, let alone to drive Potter fans across the globe batty. Honestly, I am certain that a number of fan sites (e.g. mugglenet.com, my personal favorite) are probably blaring the mistake, much like LotR fans did when Peter Jackson accidentally allowed a passing car to remain in a shire scene in the first film. Frankly, I bet Cuaron is having a good laugh at the expense of the obsessive.
from mirasoprano :
Lauren, the scar was indeed on the wrong side for one scene, and it drove me INSANE. It still haunts me to this very hour, I think. Alright, enough sarcasm. I'm glad you enjoyed the film!
from nada-y-todo :
It's actually a graphic novel, which I just discovered a few weeks ago. It is Rich's (!) favorite movie, by the way, which I discovered the same night. Also, what happened to your latest entry that makes me want to puke? I need to read it a few times so I can expel this hatred and loathing that is welling up in my throat.
from invisibledon :
thanks for doing my oddsandends survey - liked the answer and the joke is funny
from mirasoprano :
As you read this note, please picture me with an unabashedly ashamed face. Right, then, so...I read your diary entry on the seeming absence of feminist discourse from your life, and I must say that all of your mullings over whether or not women should embrace divergence, and whether or not it is "safe" for such strict fissures to be placed between the genders is the stuff that comprises my entire honors thesis. So, not that I am seeking to impose my own, intellectual "niche" on you, but if you would ever like to read it, please just ask. I think you would find it interesting, and I would love to hear what you have to say. I do tend to cringe when I read the material of the most noted difference feminists (e.g. Lakoff, Gilligan), but dear Virginia and Helene bring me back to the center - I'm sure they do the same for you. Ultimately, I hope the reader of my piece will come away with the understanding that different is not inherent, nor is it entrapment - it is empowerment (at least it was for dear Betty and Rachel). Alright, I hope you continue to enjoy life abroad!
from wonderwall :
hey. it sounds like you are getting a lot out of your experience over there :) i just wanted to say in retrospect i am really glad i am only going into an MA program rather than a phD. first of all, i am really young and have plenty of time to get a phD. secondly i wanted to do a phD bc i felt like it would be less academically respectable to get an MA first but thats not true... and i was so worried abt paying for it but somehow it will all work out. Just thought I would offer my perspective. Also-- why do parents think dinner parties are so mature? Mine had the same reaction. It's just replacing pizza with dinner and beer with wine, in my opinion. :)
from nada-y-todo :
Thanks very muchly for the links. I feel like a fat woman in a buffet line. Or me in a buffet line.
from uurabbit :
I've been browsing through your diary for a bit, and it seems like we have a lot in common.
from intheory27 :
I'm going to have to get used to paper once more for....da da da....spring break! So close, my homegirl, so close indeed.
from intheory27 :
(your comments hate me) I am so broken up over that. When I have absolutely nothing to say, I rely on your words to hold pertinence. Hmm..even when I do have things to say, really..interesting. Also, I don't know who manchmal is, but if she'd come up to me and asked if I was, in fact, me..I would have been totally cool with that. :)
from manchmal :
Lauren, I was at MC (at a student art opening) visiting my old advisor Tina (who is the director there now, I think)...ANYhow, I would swear swear swear I saw your friend Lani there. Except I don't know how I know who she was, or even if it was her. And I was going to be all "Oh! Are you Lauren's friend?" But then I realized how ridiculous THAT would sound. Probably wasn't her. But I was thinking of you.
from wonderwall :
you dont need a refresher course, just buy the kaplan gre book :) and... you are as cool as your professors. yea, i might get rejected from all my phd applications so i shouldnt be giving advice, but if you want to do it, GO FOR IT :) applying more than once if necessary is always an option. have fun with the monkeys.
from intheory27 :
And yeah, OAR's going to be on campus in April. Fraq.
from razberryjam :
hey. a friend and i are doing a zine on the general theme of obsession. i like your style, and i was wondering if you'd be interested in submitting something? let me know, and i hope all is well with you abroad.
from afuzzyscarf :
Just read your plethora of Netherland entries...it's crazy how often I've felt the exact same way, but as a part of my (own) special brand of repression, it's hard for me to verbalize or even write out how I feel. The moments of "Wow, I'm in Europe!" ecstasy can be few and far between...but then there are those moments when you know without a doubt that this trip will be one of the best things you've ever done. And just remember, if you're ever having a bad day, fuzzy scarves can do miracles.
from mirasoprano :
Is it wrong of me to hope that Ralph Nader dies? At the moment, I am conceiving a delightful death scenario in my mind - Nader would be driving toward Pennsylvania Avenue, then suddenly be broadsided by an eco-friendly car driven by a Green Party member. He would subsequently be trapped in his own, flaming vehicle by the seatbelts that he worked so hard to have placed in every American vehicle during his consumer activism days. That is so wrong of me to say, especially as a liberal, but "electability" is one of the few, new buzzwords that I wholeheartedly agree with. Ralph Nader, you are a spoiler, and you will do little more than hand us another Dubya term on a veritable silver platter. And that, I'm afraid, would be enough to make me step away from the political life forever. *sigh* Alright, enough complaints about renegade candidates. I hope things are going well for you!
from wonderwall :
england IS the greatest :)
from afuzzyscarf :
Your new template is quite fantastic as well. It IS amazingly easy to get along speaking only English there...I did feel really guilty doing that, though! I'm still waiting to hear if I was accepted into a year abroad study program at University of Reading for next year...I'm going crazy not knowing for sure! But definitely keep updating your diary, because I love reading about everything!
from intheory27 :
Oh my gosh...your new template just made my entire freaking lonely day. Rock on, homegirl.
from desenchantee :
Hey, I just wanted to say good luck and have a great time over there.
from intheory27 :
You're going to be all kinds of fine, my friend. Yes, yes I am sorely the least autonomous person I know and a room without a tv or internet or any movement at all sans illegal fish is driving me quite literally a little more insane each day, I know that you are infinitely cooler and will make way more progress in your first weeks than I have. I have every faith in you. :) Also, Josh and I are thinking about spending our first week of Spring Break here, working on our papers, then the Sunday of the second week, we're going to Stonehenge with Butler, but the rest of it's for travel...are you free at all in the first or second week of April, for we simply much see each other. :) Ok, I'm off now, enough ramble. Do call as soon as you settle in, I want to hear all about it. :) All my love. :)
from indigo-love :
i love love love love reading about your study abroad preps. they take me back... (i studied abroad in paris in high school and tokyo and osaka in college). i KNOW you will have a blast. and remember... travel as much as possible. i hardly EVER went to class when i studied overseas -- i learned more by being out and about.
from wonderwall :
hey :) you have such an interesting perspective. i wish you nothing but luck in the netherlands, have an AMAZING time :) do go to london if you get the chance and check out the british library... i loooooooved it there, they have some amazing archival exhibits! anyway, good luck, enjoy your adventures :) try to keep writing!
from bixshortie :
Good entry (life and motherhood)! I agree wholeheartedly with all of it; the penultimate paragraph could have been me talking, although, deep down, I'd like to think that one day I'll be in a place where I'm ready to be a good mother. There are so many unfit mothers around, there should be a guide. Sad that not everybody looks at it like you do.
from datura93 :
I just wanted to stop in here and say hello. I've been lurking in your diary on and off for awhile and I must say you do an excellent job at expressing yourself! Love the new layout too! You sound a little down and so I'm hoping maybe a note from a stranger will bring you a smile...Have a wonderful time in Europe. Later... )0(
from fullmoonblue :
Good luck - I'm sure it'll be amazing!!!
from mirasoprano :
Lauren, I attended a Christianity-based school from the time I was 3 until I turned 11 (a lot of good that did), and we definitely concluded the Pledge of Allegiance with a resounding "amen." Then again, we finished off lots of activities with that little word - recess, cookie time, etc. - Okay, those comments are all in jest, I am soooo going to hell for that. Yeah. Good luck preparing for your journey to Europe - I am incredibly jealous!
from irishblueyes :
Hi. Just wanted to say you such an interesting diary. I actually found you while browsing a Ryan Adams fanlisting as opposed to diaryland oddly. Anyway, great diary. Peace. - Kristina
from afuzzyscarf :
Haha, I love counting down the days until I leave to go somewhere exciting...and when you hit less than a month, well, that's the greatest feeling. As I sit here on my lunch break, eating cold Chinese food, I'm wildly jealous that you get to go to the Netherlands, and I can only hope that Boston is at least half as fantastic as Amsterdam was. (Hah, when I was there, I got so many people, and not tourists, asking me directions...apparently, I look very "Dutch", which even my friend commented on).
from invisibledon :
thanks for doing my noreally survey - I had a great time reading your answers and no problem on the survey I think I should do another one but I can't think of a topic
from wonderwall :
happy new year! congrats on the new haircut, i think you are brave but i'm sure it's beautiful :) i totally agree about the new john mayer, by the way. it's a damn tragedy, really. "bigger than my body"??? bleck.
from candora :
love the evolving you've been doing... hope your new year is your best yet :)
from desenchantee :
Your hair seems to be a bit on the wavy/curly side from the pics, and if it is, I'm not sure that a pixie would be the way to go..it might poof out. (Unless you like poofiness). And congrats on having the courage to return the god-awful clothes. If you didn't, you'd probably be killing yourself being stuck with them and feel guilty for not wearing the ugly things (or at least I do). And luggage with wheels is uber-handy in Europe! Happy holidays. xx Desenchantee
from xylem :
I know what you mean, my visits to my relative always used to end up with him calling someone on TV a 'darkie', or someone effeminate a 'mucky old poof'. He's dead now, so I haven't visited him in a while, but I still shudder at remembering...
from afuzzyscarf :
Huzzah for scarfs! I have two at the moment, and am always getting compliments from random people on them...one is this huge long fluffy one my friend knit for me out of baby wool and the other is this awesome boa-y looking one that I bought in Nottingham, and it's the coolest shade of green ever. Another friend has knit me one for this Xmas...mmm, I love scarfs!! (And, like you, I never used to wear them!)
from afuzzyscarf :
Hee, this is actually sort of related to the previous entry...but I was in the midst of some Dropkick lovin' when I read your entry and immediately had to put in Jeff Buckley...ohh, "Hallelujah", so beautiful.
from bixshortie :
Good entry. I'm gonna have to go and listen to Alanis now, you got me in the mood. Good luck with the finals x
from desenchantee :
What tape program(s) do you use and are they any good? The one I use is sort of hard to navigate, which is why I still haven't progressed much with the language.
from roxyelliot :
Perhaps buy nothing day had an impact at the mall where I work. We didn't see nearly the crowds that were expected, and barely met our sales goal for the day.
from b-jy-ce :
yup, i'm still in school. i'm a senior, sooo close to graduating. hey, so you're into french feminist theory eh? i took a writing of women class last year and we did a lot with french feminist theory. the only bad part about it was that if you weren't a women's studies major it was sort of like walking into a movie that had already been playing for 2 hours, where you have no idea what happened prior to walking in. i found it really interesting, but some of it seemed really abstract to me. anyways, happy thanksgiving! "When, however, one reads of a witch being ducked, of a woman possessed by devils, of a wise woman selling herbs, or even a very remarkable man who had a mother, then I think we are on the track of a lost novelist, a suppressed poet. . . indeed, I would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman." Virginia Woolf
from elliorange :
♥ Lovely layout.
from desenchantee :
Ahh you're going to the Netherlands in 2 months. I envy you!! I think you said before you're studying in Utrecht? I need to get my Dutch up there, too, but the only thing I can find is CDs and tapes, no colleges around here offer it!
from raven72d :
Hmmmm... I've been going over your lists and statements and entries... You're an interesting and intriguing discovery.
from afuzzyscarf :
Hey hey, good to hear from you; I finished my 100 things list...I've meant to do one of those for ages, but I was never inspired enough to get past number, oh, 10 or so. Haha, and congrats on being a fellow spelling bee champ; I think my parents still have those silly plaques somewhere.
from bixshortie :
Have visited one link on your site, and am feeling all empowered already! Go feminism! x
from scoutish :
hi
from veronica-- :
I've visited your page twice unintentionally! The first banner I clicked I don't remember but I liked it, the 2nd one I clicked because it had a Joe Walsh quote. Have a good day!
from amalthea23 :
excellent. i love to meet fellow fans :)
from intheory27 :
I just saw your 'off the heezy for sheezy' banner. So, so cute. By the colors alone, I knew it was you. So great. :)
from afuzzyscarf :
It was kinda freaky going through your '100 things about me' list (and other stuff in your diary), and every other one (or so), I thought, "Cripes, this girl and I have freakily similar beliefs and thoughts." (Even down to the vegetarian trying to go vegan thing.) And I'm all about the Kucinich-ness. So yeah, rockin' diary.
from candoor :
you again. wait. maybe. fine anyway.
from gbg :
Welcome to the Wal-Mart sucks diaryring!
from intheory27 :
Haha! I spent forever trying to figure out if sex actually (sex actually...ha!) was gross or not anymore...and I suppose it still is icky (and will always be), but man, I don't know if I'm all diary-ring fervent about it anymore. ;)
from silent-stars :
why thank you :-)
from roxyelliot :
Kucinich is as electable as people believe he is. I can't tell you how many people say they'd vote for Kucinich but he can't win. If everyone of those people turned around and voted for him the man would win by a landslide. Also, I like your layout. :)
from wonderwall :
happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear lauren, happy birthday to yoooooooou! have fun being 21, i am almost there :)
